Cyclocross and Gravelbiking (Recreational) This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like : "Unbound Gravel". Is there a particular reason you want a flat bar gravel bike? You could buy a ready made mountain bike with super low gearing, and probably achieve very similar results. I plan to build a gravel bike with a SRAM nx drivetrain, but want drop bars, and a light frameset. Not many gravel bikes have this combo, unless you go with SRAM AXS.

Check out the SRAM nx too btw. You can get the crankset, chain, rear derailleur, shifter, and an 11-50 cassette for $375. Just add a BB. Its a screaming deal.

You can run MTB derailleurs with road brifters using this adaptor.

Shimano SLX 7000 series will run an 11-46 cassette without issue or any modifications. If you are planning on going flat bar, the 7100 12 speed 10-45 cassette looks pretty nice. But that presents a whole new set of issues to deal with.

I use an SLX on mine. It's 11-42 and works pretty well. I don't think it could handle a 46 though.

I use microshift bar end shifters that have mountain ratio pull. It's pretty good but leaves me wanting more occasionally but only just barely.

I really think to hit the sweet spot for 1x on a gravel bike you need a 10 tooth cog.

38X10-42 would be ideal. Go with whatever product can achieve this.

Agreed. New wheel/s is a non-starter for most unfortunately. Myself included

11 vs 10 isn’t much difference when you can change up your chainring too.
