Donofan's Echo 2012

6/10

This one had more promise than it delivered. Danny Glover did a convincing job as the lead character experiencing moment of déjà vu that leads to his life's purpose. But the overall movie lacked enough relatable characters, and cohesiveness to generate any lasting emotions.

"Donofan's Echo" was a compelling drama, but not always easy to tell if the story was about Glover's past life following the death of his family or his present day experiences as his premonitions lead him to save the life of a young girl whose future influences her to becomes a physicist. She would eventually become the inventor of cold fusion. But in the end, no real point was made from any of it.

Hunt to Kill 2010

2/10

This movie is just one example why you can't always trust the rating of reviewers. I had suspicions about this one from the start, but was swayed by the near perfect score it received from its reviews. If this a 4.5/5 star rated movie then all the voters must have been 14 or younger. Which is likely the mental age of whoever wrote the screenplay.

"Hunt to Kill" is the classic kidnap a loved one/revenge movie but this one veers so far away from reality that the suspense ends up being comical. Or from my perspective, totally ridiculous.

Once it reaches the half way point it take a sharp dive in quality and continue to get worse right up to the next to goofy climax. Unless you enjoy movies with poor dialogue, annoyingly shallow characters, and mindless killing, stay far away from "Hunt to Kill".

Marvel Studios' Captain Marvel

6 /10

This Marvel comic like so many before it had great potential. Unfortunately, like so many recent movies it suffers from an exaggerated case of political correctness. Its as if some great entity is working overtime to force Hollywood to compensate and correct for all the male biases and unbalances of roles created in the history of cinematic film. Pity, since that's what make what could have been a good movie only barely tolerable.

Captain Marvel (CM) is an origin story revealed through flashbacks, but told in such a way as to make its revelation totally uninspiring. Although the lead character is female, her role is essentially a male part with a female playing the role. You could easily switch between the two and nobody would know the difference.

For some reason the screenwriters seem unable or unwilling to portray inspirational female characters with any feminine characteristics. Choosing instead to give them as many male-like traits as they can pack into one film. Captain Marvel is no exception to this trend.

Beginning right in the opening scene after awaking form a nightmare CM utters to her co-star soon to be nemesis "you wanna fight". The movie goes downhill form there with enough plot hole to make it a cinematic sieve, and it never recovers.

We never get told what CM powers are nor how she manged to absorb the energy (rather than being killed) that produced them. The next nail in the coffin comes from its excessive use of CG. Following very closely in the footsteps of DC's Green Lantern despite lesson learned for its "too much CG", and all the criticism that movie received.

In any event, the character are shallow and unrefined and even the villain in the movie seems weak and flip-flops back and forth between evil villain and someone loyal to his world. The bad guys turn out to be good and the good guys bad, but not too bad.

About the only saving grace to CM is Samuel L Jackson and his recurring role as Nick Fury. Finally a character we know and like. Apparently, director Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck didn't read the book on creating an evil villain? CM is a hero movie, and every good hero needs an evil villain to fight.

If you didn't get to see this one at the cinema be grateful. If you only got to see it streamed like I did, you'd still be disappointed but not as much as you would had made a trip to your local cinema to see it.
