Chain replacement interval?

A buddy of mine told me that under normal trail riding conditions I should be replacing my chain every 200~ miles. Is this true? If so, I AM DUE!

for real amount about 5x more
newer chains seem to wear faster, perhaps due to the narrower chain?

I replaced my bicycle chain when it broke three times in 10 miles. My current bicycle has a belt.

0.5% elongation.
Use steel machinist ruler. Replace when 12 links exceed 12-1/16" or 10 links exceed 25.5 cm.
