Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Saturday -- We decided to do a little bit of climbing this weekend! I've kind of lost some of the little climbing skill I had so I figured I'd better focus on it a bit again. I was slow getting up there, but made it without walking and without too much stress. It's a start!

We had a warm climb at first (25C or so), and a lovely descent into Cygnet. Just as we got to Cygnet, it started to rain, so we headed for a small bakery and waited it out.

On the way back we had a little bit of rain, but nothing too serious. And the temperature dropped off to about 18C.

2017 Monthly February
Walking Distance (km): 79.4
Walking Time (min): 992.5
Cycling Distance (km): 747.5
Cycling Time (min): 2389.7
Stairs Climbed Number: 79.0
Stairs Climbed Time (min): 63.2
Other Distance: 0.0
Other Time: 10.0

Totals
Total Distance (km): 826.9
Total Distance (miles): 513.8
Total Time (min): 3455.4
Total Time (hr): 57:35:25

February Highlights:
  • 200 km Randonnee (timed long distance bicycle ride)... actually 215 km completed within the time limit of 13- 1/2 hours with almost an hour to spare. So it ended up taking us 12 hours and 35 min.
    .
  • February Century - my 14th in a row. We've been cycling one 100-mile ride each month for the past 14 months. This was also the 200 km ride mentioned above ... two birds ...
    .
  • 57 Hours and 35 Minutes of exercise! Better than my last couple years!
    .
  • Over 700 km of cycling outside. My goal for this was actually 600 km, so 700 km is great!
    .
  • A 5-day cycling tour in Victoria ... see story here: https://www.bikeforums.net/touring/1...t-tours-2.html and photos here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/machka...57691209134945 (starting with 20Feb18)
    .
  • Finished my 7th University Course, my 3rd of the particular level I'm hoping to complete soon, and started my 8th Uni Course, and the 4th and last one of the particular level I'm working on.

40 and 30 miles. The 40 mile ride was unintentional -- I intended to ride only 20 miles but took a wrong turn and kept going until I figured out where I was. Fortuitously discovered some new stuff to explore again.

Averaging 15 mph, including slowpoke warm up and cool down miles. I'm alllllmost fast enough to try the local fast club's B-group again. Haven't ridden with them since October. I kept getting dropped so I was determined to speed up a bit first. I'll try their shorter Tue-Thu rides first and see how it goes.

Saturday, slept late, woke up feeling tired and decided to sleep in.

Sunday, went hill climbing. Very cool and misty weather in the morning, but temperatures quickly rose after sunrise and it was already getting hot by 9am. By 10am the sun was already blazing down making the return climb a lot more taxing.

But the big "highlight" of the day was being chased by a bee. I reached the regroup point at the peak and noticed a big bee hovering near me. Crossed over to the other side of the road, and it was there again. Rode about 100m away and after barely a minute, lo and behold! It's there again. In the end I told my group that I'll go descend first and wait for them at the bottom, no point in hanging around waiting to get stung.

Cold front was to come thru Fri/Sat, AND IT DID. Headed out 11:15PM Friday night and rode until 6:08AM Saturday with a couple of stops. Back at house with 101 miles completed after temperature had dropped 15 degrees "F" as winds picked up.

Got back out at 7:45AM to join group at LBS but decided to continue riding solo instead even though it was windier. Finished second segment of riding for Saturday with another 50 miles making it 151 miles of solo effort.

Sort of a perfunctory roller session yesterday as the wind blew like crazy outside. Not that it was all so bad yesterday - they held the races in the park, and others got decent rides in, but I was too chicken (see thread on Tales of Not Riding). 11 miles in half an hour, thanks largely to the lively tempo of the music playing.

Today was a surprise in several ways. When I got to the Alpine Boat Basin, I saw the tide had caused the river to wash over and flood the parking lot - evidently not long before I got there - a friend had been there earlier and it was fine. Thought it was going to be a solo ride, and it was up to Nyack, although I did see some familiar groups heading back on my way up. While stopped for a coffee and staring at the phone, I saw another friend post something about being at the bike shop down the block, so I headed over and there was a big ol' gang of folks to join! We did a bit of climbing and made our way back. Unfortunately, we didn't have quite the tailwind hoped for, as we took the low road before climbing back up from Tenafly. Once we were back up on top of the Palisades, it was just sort of breezy, slightly gusty, and not particularly advantageous. But we had a nice lunch at the end, and a couple more from the gang stopped by while we were there.

Including the ride home, just under 60 miles and 4,000'.

Between work, and being out of town for work, February was not a good cycling month for me. I did quite a few short traspo rides, but nothing over 10 miles or any kind of climbing since February 1. So now I'm out of shape and the weather is decent for a few days, and I want to get back into it...fast. There is one solution: spring + single speed = Springle!

Friday: Springle 1: 17.7 miles, 1575 feet. Up the hill, cruise around, and back down. Then up. Then down.

Saturday: Springle 2: 32.8 miles, 1635 feet on an out and back. It was warm - 50F - but there was a 15MPH wind to contend with. I got to the 11% part of the first hill with the headwind in my face, and it wasn't gonna happen. Silly me thought I'd be tough and try to clip back in while gaining momentum, and that wasn't gonna happen either - boom! Fortunately nobody saw me fall over (or walking in road shoes up to the top). Just a few blank stares from the cows.

Sunday: Springle 3: 21.5 miles, 1035 feet on a popular loop. 50F again, but now with SE winds 18MPH. The bit on the ridge was brutal, but I got some good times with a tailwind (despite madly spinning out the only gear).

Springle is now over for a bit, with a winter storm rolling in tomorrow: goodbye potholes, hello studs. Man I love cycling.

Group ride w/ neighboring club. The usual (fast) suspects showed up,

& I was able to hang on for about a third. A gruppetto of 4 formed, & we finished 1 mph slower.

Cold- ice on the road in the morning. Bundled up & only removed glove liners during the day.

Pretty much recovered from a cold 2 weeks ago, & lost a week of riding but did OK I guess.

Added another 20 miles Sunday. Was supposed to be resting but rode to visit a friend who just got home from the hospital. Legs were dead, headwind half the ride, and the last half mile to her house is a 6% grade. But I can rest tomorrow.

Here in the Baltimore/Washington area on the East Coast of the US, Friday and Saturday had 60+ MPH winds with trees falling all over the place but by Sunday the winds were down to reasonable level with gusts up to 25 mph.

I did a reverse version of a 30 mile loop I do often - since the wind was out of the NW, this minimized my direct exposure to headwinds, gave me a bit more tailwind. It was a beautiful cloudless sunny say, temp topped out at 50F. A bit of riding on the Baltimore Annapolis rail trail, then roads east to the Chesapeake Bay at Sandy Point State park - 8 miles of tailwind! From there it was a bit of strong exposed side winds and head winds back to the east to Annapolis and then 7 miles north mostly shielded from the wind on the Rail Trail.

Fri: TGIF zwift ride as usual. Wanted to get a good ride in since the storm was going to make saturday useless for the most part.

Sat: still really windy from the storm so we mostly did house stuff. We were dog sitting so we took him for a good 2.5mi walk around town. Decided late in the day to go for a short mountain bike ride. Fun little area near my GF's work that she can get quick rides in easy. 5-6mi or so.

Sun: Friend and I got out for a longer mountain bike ride. 3" of rain and wind did a number on the trees. We were moving as much as we could and had to walk around a bunch that need saws. Was feeling really good and was riding things better than usual. Until I tried one log i've only done a few times, mistimed my pull up and went over the bars hard. Nothing too hurt but a bruised elbow and pulled muscle in my neck. Finished the ride still riding well.

Oh and we came across this big tree down across one trail.... going to need a re-route

The weather changed to cool and breezy. Saturday I went to a rails to trails path, Withlacoochee State Trail. Worked really hard against a head wind in the hopes I would get blown back with a tailwind. Nope. Had to pedal hard both ways. Quite the workout however, and I was happy that I was able to keep up a good pace. 42 miles total. Sunday my legs were pretty beat, but managed a ride to Thonotosassa for 41 miles. Tuesday I did my shorter Davis Is. evening ride for 26 miles.

40 mile loop with just under 2000 feet of climbing. Waited till almost 11 for the temp to get up to 50. Felt great in the sun but a bit chilly in the shady spots.

Sunday: 65km with around 600 metres of climbing.
