What is this for
I got a blue Trek 850 MTB and wonder what the little standoff thing is on the inside of the seat stay.

It's for holding the chain when you remove/install the wheel. For best luck shift to the smallest cog when installing/removing the wheel.

I never liked that location for a chain peg. One still has to lift the chain up and onto the peg. Unless one carries a bent spoke for this lift hands will still get dirty. Instead locating the peg on the chainstay just forward of the drop out lets the chain settle onto the peg on it's own. The chain is still held "open" to ease wheel reinstall. Andy

Just remember to lift chain off the peg before riding after replacing the wheel or you will snap that thing right off....did that to my first road bike on the first day of owning it back in the early 80s.
