My tours are pretty short, the loaded? pic above was Multnomah falls to Cascade Locks out and back, maybe 25 miles.

Way too many tools or comprehensive kit depending on how you look at it, snacks and jacket/shirt, maybe long finger gloves, not much really.

Same setup as when I pretended to tour with you guys on the MMT with the Merz.

Merziac Dooes riding in the drops hurt your wrists with the bars at that angle ? Like that silver color I need one that color to go with my P60

thumpism Like that one was it a frame or a bike when new? what crank is on it? Wish mine would have rainbow decals or at least the complete set of standards

When would I ever ride in the drops?

I rarely do, but it's fine when I do. I can ride all day but spend little time in the drops, don't really get after it and just keep pedaling.

Something odd about the whole setup, I'm about 6ft even but have a 38in inseam so long of leg and the reason I got this one after getting the 26 inch Merz a couple of months before. This one confirmed I had been riding bikes way to small for me despite having them adjusted so they work.

These two big ones ride much better for me especially on long and or harder rides.

I had a fitting where I took the Big Merz and a 78 BG that is 61cm short wheelbase criterium geometry, two very different bikes aside from the big difference in size.

He was amazed that I not only had them setup very well for me but mainly that I had done it with such very different bikes also so different in size.

The silver Paramount was a no brainer to go with the silver Merz and it may get some upgrades to bring it on par to log more miles. The Merz is my go to, 9 speed brifters and all.

Purchased it as a frameset while working at Seattle Cycles and swapped over stuff from the Trek 710 frameset I retired at that time (and later sold). That's an early Stronglight 99, one for which I actually have a remover, that came on my old PX10. I did have different stem and bars at that time, but now these, and the tape to match the decals, of course.

Occasionally I wish I'd ordered cantilever bosses but no matter. I do wish they'd built the touring bikes with clearance for larger tires. If yours is an '84 it must be from late in that production year to have those decals.

thumpism it's 535 G J8480 it has 700-32's that are 32mm on it now. Has clearence to go 38 maby 40 would be tight at the chain stays. does yours have a Made in Waterford Wi decal on the left chain stay?

The largest tires I have had on my 84 are Pasela 35s. I can't do fenders with the 35's though a real fender whisperer might be able to make it work. I am fairly certain a 38 would fit between the chainstays but I don't know how much clearance there would be under the rear brake bridge.

Does a '71 P13 equipped with handle bar bag qualify? I have ridden it a century in day.

Pickles and pickle juice were consumed because they were supposed to ward off leg cramps.

Mine has no such decal, and while there might be room between the chainstays for a tire wider than a 32C there is no more space under the brake bridge or fork crown for a taller one.

Another 1974 Paramount P15-9 Touring. Rescued, repaired (by a BF member), and repainted by me. She's had a number of compositions throughout the years, and is my top bike.

As restored, with 27" wheels and nearly-period-correct Suntour Superbe:


I put 11-speed Campagnolo Athena EPS electronic shifting after a number of 700C wheel and standard cable-shift options. 35mm tires just fit in between the stays. This was her most athletic form, with race bike-like out-of-saddle response and characteristic. What a joy. Too bad the new (but old/unused) battery died due to improper care (needs regular charging no matter what).


This is her current form. 3x10 Dura-Ace. 7800 shifters and derailleurs. 7400 crankset with Specialites TA tripleizer. R600 standard reach brake levers. 7400 8-speed wheelset with MA-2 rims and Soma Supper Vitesse EX "33mm" tires. This is the mile crusher setup. Fast enough, but built for ultimate comfort over the long haul. Been on a number of long day rides.
