N is a stochastic variable, its maximum value is S-1. At the point N=S-1, the correct number of bikes is N. However, if a person is single, S-1 is an infinite number minus 1, unless it's close out season, at which point you should buy the whole infinity.

It actually means the exact opposite: N+2 = S, i.e. buying two more bikes in one go equals instant separation. But your initial premise is all wrong, since N+1=S-1 is the critical state. As long as N+1 < S-1 you're safe.

As I believe in numerology, every of this numbers has a secret sense for me. I can say what does any of these numbers mean, but it's much more important and interesting what does this number mean to you personally. So to say, I started to learn numerology for a long time ago and now I am a proficient in this science. You will be surprised by the meaning of these numbers in a numerology field and if there is somebody curious, you can access https://www.sunsigns.org/angel-number-533-meaning/ and you will see the interesting meaning of any number you want
I'd read the stuff on that link, but then I'd have to redo my phrenology chart to account for the bumps from banging my head on the desk.

N = S+3, where S is for storage. I.e. we have three more bikes than we have room for.

9 now. I keep them away from the house, locked up in my shed. My wife knows I have a few bikes. She is unsure of that number, well, because I never tell her and they are out of her sight.

In most math series, the number of terms is denoted by "n" - if there are five items involved in the calculation, n=5.
The joke is that "if 'n' is the number of bikes you own, then the correct number of bikes to own is 'n+1', meaning regardless of how many bikes you have, you should get one more.
I have been told the same equation works with guitars and with *ahem* firearms. Or anything related to a hobby that people like to collect.

26 years ago, 17 bikes were counted by my wife, and that did not include her bike, nor the son's. Today, I presently have 8 at home, 1 each at work, son's house and daughter's house for 11. She knows of 7 at home, not the 8th. She once commented if I got another bike, she got a puppy. That was 4 bikes ago... No new puppy... As I am now on a bit of a de-clutter kick, I may be letting some go.

Another helpful tip is to only get bikes in one or two colors, or a limited palette; I’ve managed to get more than a couple project / donor bikes through the shop this way.
She might not notice that there’s another black or silver bike hanging around, but she’ll damn sure notice that yellow one.

My wife knows how many bikes I have, and she's kind of ok with it, but she had a hard time understanding why I have more than helmet when she bothered to notice. (one very well vented road, and a reasonably priced mtn bike helmet.)
