Man shot along Rio Hondo Bike Path in South El Monte

Does anyone have more info on this? Man, is it too much to ask that I can ride my bike without worrying about getting run over or shot at?

SOUTH EL MONTE -- A man was wounded in a shooting along the Rio Hondo Bike Path Sunday, officials said.

The attack was reported just before 4 p.m. on the bike path near San Gabriel Boulevard and the Rio Hondo, Los Angeles County sheriff's Lt. Loy McBride said.

The man hearing gunshots, but not seeing where they came from, before realizing he had been struck twice, the lieutenant said.

He was treated for injuries not believed to be life-threatening, McBride added.

Further details were not immediately available. The shooting was being investigated by deputies from the Sheriff's Parks Bureau.

I saw that. Not much information. Between this and the decomposing body a rough month for the trail...

From the description, it sounded like it's right around the RC Plane field and the shooting range?

Possibility of a stray bullet from someone on the range shooting at one of the RC Planes? (It is reputed to be an issue)

I can buy one stray bullet. But two, hitting a fast moving cyclist from the distance of 500-1000 feet, would be as likely as being struck by lightning.

Are there any points on the bike path where people on the shooting range have direct line of sight to cyclists?

If memory serves correctly, sorta, after passing under the 60 you can see part of the range.

What about further south? The article seems to imply that it happened south of the range, closer to San Gabriel Blvd.

The guy would have to be a better shot than Lee Oswald to hit twice at that range. Still, shooting at R/C planes, especially if several guys are doing it, could-against pretty long odds for sure-score more than one hit.

Hmm, are there TWO shooting ranges there? Your pic is north of the 60. I was thinking about "Triple B Clays" south of the 60.

There's another shooting range just south of the freeway on that trail. - it's also closer to San Gabriel, so I think that's the location. This one has a skeet shooting range, too.

I think it sounds like he was hit by stray shotgun spray - two pellets worth. If someone had been trying to shoot him; he would likely have been knocked over.

Wait a quick minute...did we even establish that he was on a bike? I'm going over to the SEM safety station to ask around...

No, nor do we know what he was shot by (type of round).

I think you'd know if you got hit by a rifle and hand guns and shotguns probably don't have the range and certainly don't have the accuracy to hit anybody that far away twice.

A shotgun fired up at the 45 degree angle (from the skeet shooting range, for example) certainly can drop some pellets 500 feet away, but damage from these pellets will be minimal.

So I called over to the Bureau and yes it was a male Latino riding a bike who got shot. Beyond that, they are still investigating...

This is most likely just another gang shooting. That area is straight ghetto and full of gang members and criminals.

It is nearly impossible he was shot by a participant at the skeet range. Bird shot from a shotgun just wouldnt travel that far and it wouldnt cause any damage.

There is in fact another shooting range but its limited to .22 caliber rifles and thus would require 2 amazing shots from a distance and direction that just isnt possible from that range.

There have been numerous shootings over the years at the narrows and never from the ranges, always from the gangs and thugs.

I agree - skeet shooting ranges are set up pretty well so that any shot that makes it past the rear boundary is not likely to cause any damage. if he didn't even know he was shot, I'm guessing someone took some shots him with a .22 from a distance.

It's just unfortunate that now I have to think twice about riding through that spot. So they're "investigating", but I don't know if anyone actually expects anything to come out of that.

Now that I think about it some more - if it was gang related, the "I didn't see the shooter" story makes sense. The victim may want to take care of it on his own.

As for "male latino riding a bike;" that describes several guys that I ride with. They're climbing machines.

Nice. I hate that I have to drive to Yorba Linda just so I won't get shot at.

If you search through this subforum there are several threads debating the safety of this trail and others. I'll continue to use it I think it's a wonderful trail. But, once again...this is why we can't have nice things...

The odds of getting shot at random, while higher in areas like S. El Monte, is still pretty low, possibly on the order of dying in a car crash. Remember, Sharon Tate lived in one of the richest neighborhoods in LA.

If we act terrified, the terrorists win.
