64-spot in the semi-local environs on the '85 steel pinarello. se to city heights, lemon grove and spring valley, then south to sunnyside, bonita and chula vista, then west to the flatitudes of imperial beach
and coronado. ferry from coronado to dtown san diego, a roll thru balboa park and toodling around the neighborhood for cheap, but faster than usual, miles as i was getting cold.
a bit windy but expected and a nice april day. mixed in a mexigrub lunch and a beer stop and still had plenty of energy so the status quo is just about restored.

61 miles and 3K of climb over Turnbull Cyn and up the SGRT to the Azusa Cyn entrance O/B. Trail was clean and no homeless blocking the trail w/ stuff. Nice to get out midweek for a change and get some miles in.

Hwy 39 - East Fork - GMR. Felt way better than when I did it in January. Weather was pretty much perfect, too.
Best part of the ride - descending GMR. This is easily one of my favorite descents ever. Here's the last section...

Tuesday: Short ride with a good friend. A couple of laps around the Rose Bowl loop, and then a couple of climbs in the adjacent hills. 23 miles, sub-1.5 hours. Fun little ride.

I like speed
Anyone ride Santa Ana River Trail from Green River Rd. lately?
It's been quite a while since I've gone there and noticed the construction around the trail head. I'm curious where people are parking and if the trailhead is open.

Solo 46 in OC today at 17.4 average speed. Good headwind today but felt good. Maybe it was taking off the midweek rides this last week. Being lazy but good recovery.

I have not been lately (2021) but from Green River at SART there is the area around Jack in the Box, the GR village and the GR golf club where there is SART parking.

Rut, rut, rut... 53 miles and 6150 feet of climb in the Turnbull Cyn, Powder Cyn, Cypress-Skyline climb and Murphy Ranch areas. Need to hit the San Gabs this week for a welcomed change and longer climbs.

Did some nice hilly rides around Anaheim Hills, Brea/Olinda Hills, YL & Orange Park Acres this weekend. Wife & I were discussing how we could've designed a nice stage route for the now-defunct Tour of CA!

You do so many of these up and down rides with good gain. Makes me wonder how you do on climbs like GMR? Is GMR easier for you or is it more of a challenge? Doing all this climbing, I would think GMR would be a breeze for you. But some people actually prefer up and down. I myself enjoy a single long sustained climb vs the up and down. I'm not fond of cooling down between climbs myself, probably the reason I'd prefer GMR. Just curious.

GMR-GRR brings a different challenge with pacing and cadence. I will probably ride GMR-GRR to Icehouse on Sunday from Encanto Park. I have home obligations that truncate my days and it is hard to justify driving to a location when I could be riding instead. I need to get in longer climbs like Hwy 39 Crystal Lake/Dawson Saddle to prep for Tour de Big Bear and get up in the altitude.

BTW, sadly they did away with Ride Around the Bear starting Tour d Big Bear. Most of the fun and sense of accomplishment imo was the climb up to BB. I wanted to do that ride another few times before I get too old.

^^^^^ If the body is willing, I would like to ride into BB from Bryant/Hwy 38 to get a feel for Onyx. Never been out that way.
Lots of hills to climb in CA and my time is ticking away. Mt Palomar is another I have not done but have researched it and see there are a few ways to attack it.

From Bryant was the hardest part for me on Breathless Agony. But not because of the climb, more mental. Mainly because it looks really flat but isn't. I was thinking oh my gosh, I'm having a hard time on the flats, what is going to happen when I hit Angelus Oaks? From Bryant heading up Damnation Alley is 7 miles of 5-6% with some 7 near the top. False flat but one has to remember, descending that section, it's easy to carry 24 and 25 MPH. I struggled on that section because of the mental part. I got to the bottom of Angelus Oaks starting up to Onyx Summit. IMO, that section was much easier than Damnation Alley. Don't let it blow your mind. Strange how looking over to the mountain climb can play games on you when you think you're on the flats but really on the climb.
I have done Damnation Alley a few times and every time I find it is the toughest part of the ride. Did a training ride years ago to Forest Falls with some buds starting in Calimesa. Damnation was the hardest part. The hottest and driest as well. I will tell you, make sure you have plenty of water for that 7 mile section. I did it in the month of May and it was HOT. Forest Falls was cool but Damnation Alley was HOT. Thankfully we had a support vehicle. I think I went through 3 bottles of water on that 7 mile section. That part is a big discourager for me. I have to close my eyes then open them when I'm done hoping it's over.

Onyx from BB was not bad either. Got warm once out of the 4 times I did it but some riders build it up as a wall when it isn't any different from GRM imo.

^^^^^Thanks for the intel. I carry four bottles when out on long rides/climbs. I take my time but sometimes push my limits. Bonked hard going up to Crystal Lake a while back. That's another thing about longer climbs is taking in enough calories, fluids and electrolytes. Different animal rather than climb 1-2 miles then recover on the descents.
