Mavic Open Pros vs. H+Son TB14
Which is a better price/performance wheelset? Mavic Open Pro or H+ Son TB14, both laced to Formula hubs?

Also, if you're willing to spend the money on campy hubs (when formulas will do just fine at a fraction of the cost) you can buck up and spend the extra $30 on ATAC's.
I don't mean to be a dick, but lemme guess - this is gonna be ridden pretty much only on the street? You might wanna rethink a "bling" wheelset. But hey, it's your wallet

Now that you've restructured your original post, your pretty much picking apples or apples. Some people don't like OP's, I didn't mind them for the (albeit brief) time I rode a pair. Pick whichever one you think looks best at this point. Formulas are tried and true.
Ive heard nothing but good things about tb-14's and think they look nice.

I have a tb14 wheelset in all black and i love them. They look good and arent real heavy plus mated with these 23c hutchinsons. ride damn nice and they have put up to the abuse of some really ****ty roads here in vegas with the occasional off a curb or up one.
if im not mistaken the open pros are narrower than the tb14's if thats a factor youre considering.

I'm going to be bringing it in to the Forest City Velodrome as much as I can, but want to be able to use it for Alley Cats and long rides. The Italian-ness is a second thought and has not been my priority. I've been planning this build for roughly 6 months and am simply trying to get it running first and foremost. I simply thought that it couldn't hurt to have a nice aesthetic to go with functionality. I understand the aggression towards my aimless post. Thanks for the info guys.

Open Pro's are such a bland rim. There's pretty much nothing special about them. I personally don't think I'll ever use them.
I'd go TB14's to a sealed hub of your choosing. Not PW's though, kinda overkill for the track.

but the DAs roll so smooth when maintained correctly. i know that some say loose bearings roll smoother than sealed cartridge, but that for another thread i am sure. sure loose is less convenient, but kind of makes it more rewarding in my opinion. reminds me that i need to take mine apart pretty soon.

none of you are taking any quality aspects into consideration. only aesthetics.
the open pro rims out of the box are generally more round and true without spokes even. they are a very nice and stiff rim. and every one i've seen have been damn near perfect every time. they are always 100% as far as consistency in workmanship. they have been known to built up a much rounder and much more out of the box already true wheel. of course when you get them and ride them a bit you should true them after about a month and never have to true them again.
as for the TB14's i have heard great things about them. mainly the flex of the rim when you set it on the ground you can press down on the rim and see the forgiveness it has compared to the open pro and that generally means that it will build a more comfortable and smooth riding wheel. of course depending on the builder which i suspect youd be getting a velomine pair, then thats how good the wheel is going to be built and how true and everything they are. both rims are said be be able to be built in to perfectly true, round, bomb proof wheels that are going to last forever. and if they dont just build them up with nicer spokes and maybe change the bearings in the formula hubs to some phil wood sealed bearings.
it boils down to if youd like a narrower stiffer wheel or a slightly wider more forgiving wheel. tuner or cadillac.
the tb14 also has a wideness that actually takes away the light bulb shape of the tire and makes it ride more like a tubular wheel where the op is just like a normal ride.

Now I'm curious.

Open Pros are around 19mm wide. TB14s are 23mm wide. That translates to a big difference in ride quality between the two if using the same tire. I don't race and I do drink the wide rim kool aid.

That's all nonsense. Once you've built a wheel and properly tensioned the spokes it is virtually rigid vertically. Any "forgiveness" will come from the tires, fork and frame.

I agree that the Open Pro is generally a very nice rim, but I have seen more than a couple with eyelets pulling through the rim after a year or two of heavy use. Although, this is merely anecdotal and I couldn't say if they were overtensioned. I have also found Mavic is kind of a pain to deal with for potential warranty. Personally, I would probably choose the Mavic CXP 22 over the Open Pro to save some cash and still get a good quality rim. I have yet to see any H+Son rims in person and don't have an opinion on them.

Your cog is slipping.
I figured it was mostly brand hype at first but after building nearly a hundred wheels using H+Son rims and Angie & I using them on four of our bikes, I'm nothing but 100% pleased with them.
I've seen two Open Pros with damage near the eyelets but the spokes were insanely over-tensioned on both.
