So often in fact, that I wrote a 1000 word essay on my position in the Lance case. No, not translated yet, still in Dutch, but the main drift is that the major sin of Lance is not the doping, but turning cycling into a vehicle for "the good cause", and thus introducing the American, evangelical moral hypocrisy in a dirty Catholic European game, and in the end getting busted under the conditions he created himself. MAybe I'll translate it one day.

Yeah, it happened all the time... or at least often enough that it seemed like it, prior to his confession on Oprah.
Of course, that crowd's usually looking for quick, easy answers and usually nods off if you try to offer any context for the situation. I once tried to explain just the beef between LA & LeMond and all the two guys who asked me about it saw was a phenomenal clash of egos, without considering for a second the kind of self-determination needed to win a grand tour.
Ultimately LA's going to be seen as a kind of Nixonian figure in cycling, a subject of guilty admiration & lasting repugnance, in some ways brilliant; in others, deeply flawed. A classic example of hubris quite worthy of his condemnation.
Granted, FWIW, I think Sir Wiggo wears the Maillot Jaune with far more elan than any rider since LeMond (who might have been the last guy who won it clean); maybe since the Badger.

But since LA was one of the most tested individuals on the planet doesn't that suggest complicity throughout the whole professional cycling world? Maybe even the UCI?
I do get asked by non-cyclist about "the whole Lance thing" occasionally. I always say that I'm glad he finally got the ball to fess up.

There is a nice, long thread in the Pro forum just for the purpose of discussing Lance.
