Vintage Cyclist, what material did you use for that?

Your approach may be the most authentic-looking solution -- I have a 1981 Dawes Atlantis (the frame was recently bent beyond repair in a collision with a car). And it has an original-looking chainstay protector that looks just like yours.

If I have to work with the material myself, and carefully cut rounded corners with an X-acto knife, so be it.

Hate to say something gauche ---- but, the 'ol inner tube wrapped tightly around the chainstay and affixed with a couple of zip ties is effective and timeless

I'm sorry, just a pic stolen off the Google Image search.

It was a left-over piece of Newbaum's tape. I used an old, banged-up protector as a template and rounded the corners with scissors. The OEM sticky tape on the bottom of the Newbaum's comes within about 2mm to the edge of the tape. I made the length a little longer because the top of the chain stay was already pretty scratched-up when I got the frame. After installing, I taped-off around the edges with blue painter's tape and shellacked a few times.

Maybe something like this?
https://m.harborfreight.com/2-inch-x-50-yard-flame-******ant-aluminum-foil-tape-96372.html

I've seen similar foil tapes at auto parts stores and home improvement/hardware stores.

I'm sure McMaster.com would have something similar, too.

For visibility, you might consider cutting protectors out of reflective tape.

I wrapped with leather after having chain suck take paint off the bottom of the chainstay.

Based on that experience, I find it important to have full coverage rather than just the top of the stay.

A recent frame I bought came with one of these on it.

NOS Campagnolo Chainstay Frame Protector Chrome Vintage L'Eroica | eBay

Listed as NOS, but I think they are new production. The seller crumpled it a bit, but it still looks good.

I recognize that picture.
Those are my wife's chain rings, it's a Driveline X5 crank set.

I built the bike for my wife seven years ago, I have build thread over at the Retrobike forum.

The recipe was "Throw as much gold as possible onto a black frame."
