$75 1980s Specialized Sequoia

"Mama told me there'd be days like this"...picked this Specialized Sequoia up a few days ago for $75. Bike has bosses for 3 water bottles, Cyclone front & rear derailleurs, Superbe brake levers, calipers, shifters, & pedals, and a Sugino AT Triple. Pics are in as found condition after a quick wipe down. This one fits, & it will be a keeper. Also, anybody know how wide a tire will fit?
A Raleigh Grand Prix was included in the sale. It has a pair of replacement Suntour Barcons I will harvest, then will donate the bike to the local co-op.

Score!

The third set of water bottle braze ons indicates it's at least an '83. I think the color indicates it is an '83, but I could be wrong about that.

My '82 Sequoia will take 700x32 tires (or 650Bx38!), but with 32's fenders are an uncomfortably tight fit. I read somewhere that they increased the tire clearance in later years, but I don't know when that happened. I'd guess it was part of the Jim Merz redesign. So my guess is that if yours says "Designed by Tim Neenan" on the chainstay it will be as I described, otherwise you might have a bit more room.

I love the Sequoia but every time I find one it’s too large .

Oddly enough every time I find a Trek 620/720 it’s too small

Specialized Sequoia is a 7 iron. It's good in all conditions, and will never fail you.

Sweet score. I'd love to have one, and that looks to be just about my size too.

My mama never told me there'd be days like that. Well done! Ride it in good health, and post pics when she's all cleaned up.

Well that's quite a score. Congratulations! I remember selling those BITD. 83 sounds about right.

A bit of trivia: the third water bottle cage was really intended to hold a fuel bottle for your white gas stove, but of course it can hold water bottle if that's what you need. Cannister stoves were rare or nonexistent at the time.

These days, it works well as a place to clamp a pump, if you use the appropriate pump/holder, or a battery if you use a battery powered light. Probably would want to use fenders (assuming they fit) if you wanted to put a water bottle you intend to drink out of there.
