125km on the way home and found this Zunow at a dumpy bike shop near Phnom Penh.

A decade ago, I drove 800 miles each way for a Bike Friday Tikit folder.
It came from a Craigslist posting. Owner was an 80 year old lady who had gotten the bike thinking she was going to ride it all the time, but that didn't happen, so it was in nice shape and the price was right.
She wanted absolutely no part of shipping or Paypal or anything like that. Cash on the barrel only, and I had to pickup or no deal.
Her daughter was a real estate agent, so we set up an appointment to meet at her office. Everything goes fine, I take a short test ride in the strip mall parking lot, pay her and get ready to go.
I remember something odd happening at that point. While I was test riding in the parking lot, I noticed someone a few blocks away who was eyeing me intently. After I purchased the bike and got it ready to put in my vehicle, that person started a mad dash at me, yelling "Hey!" as he was running. I took one look at him and thought, whatever you're yelling about, I want no part of. I got the bike in the car and was driving out of the strip mall just as he was getting there. I drove off, him still yelling and waving in my rear view.

Just a guess, but it's one of the few explanations for that turn of events. Thieves don't usually come yelling "Hey!" when they approach, so it just seems really odd. Good on you to spot him in advance; that's some situational awareness all of us need to keep in mind when buying bikes.
Well, y'all made me feel much more sane. Here's the bike I did the drive for. It was about 400 miles but hit some weather that turned it into about 9 hours of driving. It was tacked onto a different drive I already had to do for part of the way which made it a bit better.
You'll have to excuse the poorly lit photos. I just got home and am not willing to do the whole schebang tonight.
But it's (I believe) an all-chrome 60s Masi Special step through. One of only a handful that I've ever heard of. Check out the one-piece bar/brake lever combo.

I drove a couple of hours each way once to meet horatio, who I think drove even further to meetup. It was for a complete Colnago Super and Basso Gap frame. Both great bikes. I sold the Super back to Horace (mailed it this time as I live further away) last year and thinking about selling the Gap so I can go on more bike buying adventures.
But these threads tend to wander, so feel free to join with that one.

675 miles, but I was already on vacation, so it was a one way trip. I found this FW Evans in Alabama and squeezed it into my SUV with our other bikes and luggage to bring back to Ohio.

I drove about 2 hours each way to pick up my rod-brake Bianchi and the same amount of time to pick up 2 Sears 3 speeds for $0. 1 went to a forum member so that was worth it.

3 hours round trip to pick up a 1985 Centurion Ironman, complete with original Bernard Hinault model Turbo saddle - which turns out not to be the saddle for me! But the bike's pretty nice.

I agreed to buy a Bob Jackson on the condition that it was ride-ready. Drove 200+ miles from Seattle to Portland and 5 minutes after touching it for the first time proceeded to ride the Banks-Vernonia trail with some of the Portland crew. New bike day and new ride day combined!

Well, I'm not the long distance winner, but I will claim the foolishness award.
I was so smitten by this Belgian tandem that I drove 1,400 miles round trip for a bike that fit my stoker well enough but didn't fit me at all!
I finally made the best of the situation by donating it to the Marin Museum of Bicycling and Mountain Bike Hall of Fame where I can go and admire it anytime I like.

Two weeks ago I drove just under 200 miles to get a Paramount from a flipper. It was disgustingly dirty and rotted tires ,seat, bar tape. But that is normal many times and it had no crash damage. Cleaned it up and doing overhaul and I find 3/4 inch crack in top tube. Looks like over clamping in bike stand. I went through 700+ bikes as a flipper years ago and never saw this on top tube.

No it is a 1991 series5 . It was low money and I dought the seller new about the crack. It is 2 inches ini front of cable hole. Crack runs vertical. I will ride and watch it. Low stress spot .I may not grow . I have replaced a top tube and chain stay on a original 1987 7/11 bike. I no longer have my shop but i mat try a weild repair if needed

305 miles 1 way = 610 miles round trip for this one from a kindred spirit with old age/balance issues, so already setup as an "Old Man" ride. Involved a 260 mile drive + ferry ride to reach my sister-in-law's home at Clinton, WA on South end of Whidby Island, where I spent the night, then drove length of the island and across Deception Pass bridge to Dewey on Fidalgo Island to PU the bike. (edit: Triple Crank, Saddle, Bar Bag, Lights by me) Don

Let's see I went to Portland a few times and Eugene once or twice for a bike. That is as far as I think I have drove though, when I sold my Trek 520 a kid drove from LA all the way to Salem and paid me $400 about half of which was in $1 and $5 bills , it would have seemed to me that a 520 could have been had cheaper in the LA area but he insisted that they were hard to time by hence his drive .

Longest trip for just a bike was 6 hours round trip to get a full Superbe Pro equipped Miele.
However, I took a bike rack on a road trip from Cincinnati to Boise & Missoula MT. Picked up a Trek 736 in Missoula, 1900 miles drive home. With regular questioning from my better half on why we brought the bike rack, why are you looking at a bike on vacation, why is it in the hotel room?

Insanity runs pretty deep around here. I thought I lost my mind driving fifty miles.
Worth it, though, by saving me a good eighty bucks shipping.
Full Dura Ace 7700 (found on eBay) on a too-large-for-me Marinoni. Less than 300 miles on the bike!
If memory serves, it cost me about $500. I sold the beautiful frameset for about that.
The seller fouled-up his auction pics and descriptions.
Then parted-out this and that to clear another thousand, while keeping the perfect shifters and brakeset.
Worth it, though, by saving me a good eighty bucks shipping.
Full Dura Ace 7700 (found on eBay) on a too-large-for-me Marinoni. Less than 300 miles on the bike!

Drove 80 miles to sell a bike. Interested party said they would pay the $300 asking price if I dropped it off. I got down there and he ghosted me. The plan was to use proceeds at a swap near by. I pulled up to the swap and a fellow bought it out of my car for the $300. All good. He called me that night and said his phone was off, lol.

July 30, 2016 I drove from Central NJ to Duxbury, MA for a 22" Raleigh DL-1 I found on Craigslist. About 620 miles round trip. Got back to NJ, found there'd been a deluge of Biblical proportions. And I missed it.

In 1972 I drove 450 miles each way to pick up a custom bike frame made to my specifications. I did not trust having it crated and shipped by a freight company as the person building the frame only made 3 each month and had quite a backlog of orders.
With bike purchases in recent years I have stayed with local bike shops within 30 miles of my house. Fortunately there are quite a few excellent shops in my area that sell Scott, Specialized, and Giant bikes which provides a very good selection.
