Holy Campagnolo! Great Tullio's ghost! I got to clean out three shop drawers worth of Campagnolo bits from a shop that's been in operation for more than 40 years for less than some eBay sellers would charge for that Zeus 26.8 seatpost. Okay, so one more now. I was in Bruges last Saturday, parked and was walking into town when I saw a bike shop with a bike hanging up with a price tag on it. Spotting it immediately from a distance and I knew it was something special. It was very special. It was cheap. So I agreed to buy it. When I went into the guys office in the back to pay, he started explaining to me whose bicycle it was. Guy was deceased, it was his personal bike and the bike had been hanging in the house since, and the family was interested in letting it go. He tells me the guys name and it doesn't register to me at first, but then he says 11 days in the yellow jersey....Tour de France stage wins.... Eddy Merckx's top domestique....
He was not racing anymore when he died so young, but was managing a German bicycle racing team, which may explain the German labels on this Martelly built frame.
It belonged to Georges Vandenberghe. Look him up...colorful history....I now have one of his machines.

Prices have come down a LOT in the city. About a month ago I saw a 720 multitrack at Dearborn St. goodwill for $40 and, on the same day, interestingly enough, a 700 multitrack for $35 at Ballard goodwill. Passed on both of em, but Goodwill has a lot of great deals these days

A free bike from an elderly neighbor who was moving to another state a couple weeks ago. It's a 1974 Grand Prix. I put the new tires on it, also a new rear derailleur as the Simplex was toast. It was filthy with grime and surface rust and had been hanging on a garage wall for least 25 years.

I wouldn't have gone for this '89 Axis today, but it was cheap and I recognized some good components on it. I aim to cannibalize the cockpit stuff (stem, shifters, levers) for a buddy's bike. There are definitely some differences between this and a stock Axis, according to the catalog scans I checked out:
There are no decals or identifying marks on the cranks. They look Cook Brothers-ish and are an odd size (177mm). The dust caps say Sugino. Non-driveside crank is cracked bad:

Sigh, the bike magnet strikes again... Came across this '85 Club Fuji this morning and on impulse took it home. It's in decent shape except for a little rust on the top tube cable guides and a lot on the left side top headtube lug. Easy enough to repair that and touch up - but not sure where I'll go with it yet, doubtful I'll keep it.

Not C&V but......Found this set out with the trash the other morning while out riding. Nice cranks and aluminum rims. Did some research on it, turns out its a pretty good model. Think I'll try to learn to ride it when the weather is more hospitable.

Oh she rode good, all the bearing sets were revived, the wheels cleaned, new seat and post. Took me a few minutes to get used to the 27" x 1 1/8" tires. Pepto Bismol colored tape... lol

Picked up this 99(?) Schwinn Peloton from Facebook Marketplace. It was one of those deals that pose an ethical quandary: the ad was for "2 Adult Bikes" and it was this Peloton with an old Walmart Roadmaster, $25 each or both for $40. I think the bikes belonged to someone displaced by the hurricane, and their friend was helping them clear out their stuff. It's still pretty rough out here. If they had tried to sell the Peloton closer to market value it would have never sold, and I feel like I did them a favor by taking the Roadmaster for $20. At least that's my justification.
I always overlook Schwinns of this era, and I admit it's solely due to aesthetic reasons. The faux vintage stylings always seemed cheap to me. But this bike is certainly not cheap. Reynolds 853 tubing, full Ultegra, American Classic seatpost. It has evidently been in a skidding crash and hung in a garage for a long while, but it's in very good shape otherwise and can ultimately be repaired. I bought it thinking I'd just use the wheelset, but I might be adding this one to the stable, even if it's not quite my style. What's the ride quality like on these?
