Classic Raleigh

My friend restored a classic raleigh (a gift to me) but with mixed shifters drive train. Now i find it hard to use the sora rx 1000 2x 9s to shift to big ring campagnolo 53T x 39T. Rd is ok with the Alivio and sagmit 34t cogs. Should I replace the sora shifter or sora fd. Thanks.

Hard to shift as in you have to apply a lot of force?

It is hard to tell without looking at the bike and components. It could be a cabling issue where there is too much friction. I would go about finding what the source of the problem is before replacing parts

I would try pushing the fd by hand to see if it has the complete range of motion. More than likely the derailleurs and/or the shifter is gummed up. You may need to flush them both with wd40 or PB blaster.

Check to see if the cable is the issue. With the rear wheel off of the ground, FD on small ring, and pedal. Now, grab the front derailleur cable, pull and observe the front derailleur...

If it shifts to the big ring, fine, you cable might be gummed up and in need of replacement but don't go spend money yet. Look at the top of the front derailleur...

Those two small spring loaded screws set the limits to which the derailleur can reach. It is possible that one or both need adjustment. One screw controls how close the derailleur comes to the frame, the other the furthest it can reach from the frame. Try some adjusting just to see if there is an improvement.

If it still does not shift, it is possible the the entire crank set is a wee bit too far out on the bottom bracket spindle (trust me, it happens, I have made this mistake and no adjustment or cable replacement will help).

Got to Park Tool and look at how to adjust derailleurs. That might be very helpful. Best of luck
