Need Help Dating Raleigh Technium
Hey dudes. First post here so let me know if I am in the wrong place/am breaking any rules.
My roommate works at a bike shop and found a pretty cool Raleigh Technium that (looks like it) fits me. Knowing that I've been wanting an older road bike to puttz around on, he took some photos. Bike shop is offering it for $75. I've done a fair amount of research, and I've found similar looking Techniums, but mostly on poorly listed classified. I can't find this exact model in this color. He didn't get a chance to get the serial number.
Some details:
Raleigh Technium Supercourse
6061-T8 Thermal Bonded in USA
Shimano Biopace Components
Would it be worth it to get it and maybe put a more modern gruppo on there?

+1 Ride it as is. Do not bother putting a modern group on. If nothing else it's a good bike to make sure you have the right size. Then when you're ready you can sell for double what you paid and get something nicer.

Quickest method to accurately guess the year of manufacture is to look for a two digit number code on the hubs. Probably Maillard hubs, the number will give you the year of that part and you can add a year for the assembly date on the bike. That's a decent price. If it fits and is not in clapped-out shape, get it, spiff it, tune it and ride it.

The subject bicycle appears to be a circa 1990-1992 Supecourse with Shimano Exage. Components appear to be mainly 400EX with possibly a 300EX rear derailleur, so it may be a slightly frankenbiked 1990 model. Very good price. I'd go with the serial number for dating, especially since there may be some non-OEM components, unless you're willing to check every single component and dismiss the outliers.
