Going To The Sun road

I finally got to travel on going to the sun road. It's a shame it was in a fire truck and not on a bicycle. I can see why it is a bucket list ride.

The downhill ride from Logan Pass is something else.

Visiting Glacier NP today. Cyclists are riding the east side from St Mary to Logan Pass. I wasn’t one of them, unfortunately.

Last time I was there (I’m originally from Montana), I saw a husband and wife pedaling up on folding Dagon bikes. She was about a half mile behind him and mad as hell. Magnificent ride, though

I went down the east side in the dark.
Apparently, you are not allowed to camp up there.
I went up the west side for the "moon ride" or whatever it's called. (Year 2000). Arrived at top by 10 pm.
it was fun to hear animals scurry away in the dark going down the east side.

My wife and I were in Glacier in June 2017 and our timing was perfect - they were still plowing but not finished so Going to the Sun Road from the Avalanche parking area to Logan Pass was closed to cars but open to bikers and hikers. We rented hybrids and did the ride up to Logan Pass - awesome, though probably would have been a bit more fun on our lighter road bikes! The awesome views on the right and the waterfalls on the left (and mountain goats) definitely helped distract from the constant 6% grind up...

The week after we were there fires hit the top and western side and burned the Sperry Chalet, so we really did luck out.

Wow, you did get lucky. I spend a fair amount of time out there and have no interest in riding a bike with all the tourists driving up that skinny road.

It would be awesome if they would close it to car traffic for a day every so often!

When I was there last year the west side was closed to cars after Avalanche Campground and had been for some time, but bikes were allowed all the way to Logan Pass. Sadly, they opened the road to cars that morning, just before I reached the loop. Still, it's a great ride. It was my third time and back down the west slope. Back in '99 I went up and over to St. Mary as part of a x-country tour.

There are some photos from last year in this album:

Notice the photo of fresh bear scat. That was taken beyond the closure point. It was one of many piles I saw. Some fresh. Some older. With no cars, the bears were clearly enjoying themselves.

Got back from tour with Bicycle Adventures last Sunday.
We started from Whitefish,MT and rode various sections to Jasper and Banff on return leg.
The first 3 days were a bit smoky, but not bad enough to effect breathing although clarity of distant views were effected.
The second day group started north of East Glacier around intersection of 49 & 89 and rode up to Logan Pass due to west access was closed from fires near Lake McDonald. I started back down towards St Marys
and after going thru tunnel in rain-sleet-hail and freezing hands I turned around and headed back to visitors center and took support van back to town.
The third day was a rain day with heavy rain on way to Waterton Lakes. It is amazing how close the 2017 fire was to the Village. They were pumping water directly from lake to protect buildings and by the time the battle completed the lake level dropped 6 inches .
The Canadian Rockies are amazing and even with not ideal conditions it was a great trip.
