Sheldon Brown's website not working!
Has anyone else experienced this? I can't get into his website nor any of his affiliates (harris cyclery etc) and haven't been able to for about a week now.
I can't figure out why, but it keeps saying "cannot find server". gah, it's frustrating.

I presume you're using a PC running Windows XP SP2 and Internet Explorer. If so, go to Start>>Control Panel>>Security Center and check out your security settings. If you're using some other system or software, I have no clue as to what you might do.
Are you on someone's network, like at work? Might they have blocked the site?

i'm using a router to my cable modem at home. i don't see how it could have been blocked... i've always been able to access it until about a week ago.
i've tried adjusting my security settings to no avail. it just doesn't make any sense...
it's acting like a website does when it's down for service or something.

Try hitting refresh when you're on the site. Sometimes your IE settings don't update pages automatically (whatever's in the temp folder is what you see) and sometimes, its just stuck on stupid. Reboot if necessary.

Good grief, you scared me. For a second there, I was afraid people would have to rely on BikeForums for useful advice...

haha,
i don't get it. nothing i did (everything recommended to no avail!) helps. i'll just have to live with it for now. maybe i'll just use another computer to look something up until i can ask my brother to fix it. When i get it sorted out I'll post my remedy here just in case someone else runs into this problem. lemme tell you, it's no fun not having that wonderful resource readily...
and yes, i always rely on bikeforums... but if i can spare a thread (and the time) or two just by looking it up beforehand, i will.

Try rebooting your router (unplugging it, wait a few seconds and plugging it back in) Some routers cache domain names and it may be that yours has a wrong address for the site.
try https://208.77.210.187/
That is Sheldonbrown.com. If that works, you have a DNS translation problem. Rebooting the router should do it.

So what happens later
Wow, that title scared me! And then I thought, I wonder if something happened to Sheldon? His website has just been so useful and his writing style so friendly that I feel like he is a friend even though I have never met him!
Are there provisions for the site in case there is a problem? Are there backups? Has anyone ever asked him about porting the stuff over to Wikipedia or somewhere else eventually? I have seen so many useful websites just vanish because of various circumstances (hell, I used to maintain one for kendo that I lost because of database woes).

But enough of that. I emailed Sheldon a couple of days ago. I asked if I could copy his site for after his passing. I said that I would wait until his site was gone before I post it on the web and all credit would be given to him.
He said it was ok. That he wanted his bike knowledge to be his legacy. So, I am planning on making a full site backup and saving it for a rainy day.
