How can I tell a velocity deep v apart from knockoffs?

There are so many knock offs of the velocity deep v; how can I tell if it is velocity or not? (without relying on paper stickers)

I'm looking at a friend's friend's "deep v" wheelset that has its stickers removed and there's no stamping/ marking inside the rim and out....

a better question would be: since the velocity deep v is a such a heavy, crappy rim, is it possible for there to be worse knockoffs, or would knockoffs actually be better than the original product?

weinemann dp18's have a ridge where the braking surface would be.

other than that, you'd have to get a caliper and measure the size. and even then, there's really no telling with some of the knockoffs. the 'julian' wheels are the same size as b-43's and the h plus son are supposedly 44mm, but basically there's no way to tell aside from cutting the rim apart and examining the cross section and joint.

so really what we're trying to tell you is that IT DON'T MATTA.

v's are crappy wheels to begin with. just buy some that look the same and call them deep v's. no one will question you. this isn't like a car show where judges deduct points for rotas. here we just deduct points for stupid questions.

Not sure what the point of the exercise is. It's not like the real velocity deep v's are significantly better than the knockoffs anyways.

How are they crappy? Do they fall apart or do spokes come out? Should I be worried? Are other Velocity rims a problem? Uh oh...

They don't stay true because the machine or person building them suck. They are incredibly strong rims because of their weight and v section 30mm.

velocity deep v is a fine rim. It is one of the strongest rims you can get, and it is sure to stay true so long as it is built by a competent builder. I have a set of Velocity Deep V rims laced to Surly hubs (built, tensioned, and trued by hand) that have taken a pretty good beating and stayed perfectly true and round.

And they really aren't that heavy. Besides...how many people on here are actually riding a light bike? You wanna lose some weight? Get rid of that steel fork and those steel track bars....A pair of Mavic Open Pros aren't going to be so light when paired with high flange hubs and straight guage spokes...

Well that's a load off! Seemed kind of fishy to me on account of having a Deep-V in back since February that's needed no truing or attention, but you can't be too cautious. Just don't want it to get one of those catastrophic failures or nothin'.

Amen. **** Rota. Anyways to the OP, if you have a chance to compare Deep V's next to Weinmanns or others, you'll be able to see the differences. Once you understand what to look for, you'll be able to tell.

I think everyone is missing the point:

Why don't you just ask your 'friend'?

i have 2 sets of deep v's. 1 set is made by veloctiy and the other i have no idea. the part where the tube goes is deeper on the unknown brand. it has sort of a v shape. the velocity rim is rounder inside. thats the only difference i see so far. they both are heavy and stay true. ive had the since march?
