Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Shimano factory fire

Anyone know if this is where they build their cycling components? If so I'm guessing we'll see a steep price increase as inventory runs out.

I am guessing it was the carbon fiber section that asploded.

Typical false news from the anti-carbon haters.

"It is believed that the segment alight is part of the firm’s anodising area."

There, clear proof that aluminium is the devil's work.

It seems most the manufacturing plants are in China. Head and sales offices seem to be in Osaka-Sakai plus the bicycle museum.

Locations | SHIMANO

According to Cycling Weekly:
"As well as being Shimano’s global headquarters, the Sakai facility is responsible for much of the component company’s research and development, with the majority of the production being carried out at larger factories in China, Malaysia, the Philippines and Singapore."

I think cycling is a small part of the pie compared to fishing.

Fear not for the supply of bike components. Shimano doesn't anodize that much bike stuff (fishing equipment is another story). Besides, there are thousands of anodizing facilities that could be contracted to take up the slack.

Shimano almost certainly has contingency plans for just such an emergency -- and their insurance company is likely picking up the tab.

Fact or fiction?

https://www.statista.com/statistics/...nt-of-shimano/

Shimano cycling sales are more than four times their fishing sales.

The fire was at HQ and their R&D building - small scale mfg capabilities. Shimano's major mfg locations are spread across China, Singapore, Malaysia, etc.

See here for full story on the location of the fire and what was located at the facility: https://www.cyclingweekly.com/news/la...n-japan-374394

Can you post a snip of the section of that subscription service?

I don't think this is a laughing matter. It looks like a disaster, even if the factory represents a small fraction of the company's manufacturing capacity.

Interesting, for some reason it works when I open it from Google search results, but it does not clicking on the direct link. Here's a screenshot:

I stand corrected. I had a friend that was a senior vice pres at a large corp that sold S fishing gear.
Once a year employees could buy out of group at corp cost. As a favor I bought a full D/A group and wheels at a unbelievable price. Oh how I wish I could get that today.

I'm only guessing, but their culture might have many fewer liability attorneys whose job it is to vet and neuter any such apologetic tendencies.

I hadn't thought about that aspect. You are right, that there are far fewer lawyers and lawsuits there. My brother worked for a giant Japanese company as their General Counsel. They basically don't sue there. And your guess makes a ton of sense. Oh well.
