Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

39x17 seems kinda small to me

mid 70's (gear inches) is always good.

I'm not using the Raleigh wheel. I have a newer (80s) 27" wheel I am using. It has a cassette hub, so much easier.

minkah - how much for the surly cog??

The combined discount adds up to more than Performance's discount prices.

I buy 2 things from Performance: 1. Nutrition (Clif Shots) and 2. Tubes.

I asked about replacing my Ultegra 10spd chain and one of the lesser wrenches handed me a 9-spd chain and said it would work fine. After I disagreed he gave me a 10 spd chain for Campy that I now need to return. If they can't hand you the right stuff don't keep 'em behind the counter (same goes for condoms, pornography & lotto tickets). Boo!

You're 100% right about this.

I'd write off Performance forever if I didn't need a new rear wheel for ultra cheap.

if you really loved her, you'd give her a track hub.

80's hub? Assuming it's shimano, you likely need a uniglide cog and lockring/threaded cog. Does it have threads on the hub shell? Do you have the cassette?

I have the thing put together. Slide on spacers, slide on cog, thread on BB lockring. Done.

Easiest way here:

If you can't figure out how to do this, you really shouldn't be working on bikes. You can even leave the extra rings on..

Ghetto, but it works.

Okay the BB lockring is not for singlespeeds. The idea of using one is for fixed cogs on a threaded freewheel hub.

If you are using a casette based hub, then you need a casette lockring, which is not the same as a BB lockring. You put the spacers on, put the cog on, put some more spacers on, then put on the lockring. In some cases the lockring is the smallest cog on the casette, in which case you could just use that.

If you were using a threaded freewheel hub, you'd just thread on a freewheel and be done with it, no lockring because no back pressure.

[QUOTE=Landgolier].... an old uniglide with threads on the hub body. I have no clue what that threading is, it might be the same as english BB but I kinda doubt it.

You are right, it is smaller at 34.6mm
