Work has been a little chaotic for me and I’ve actually missed maybe three workouts in the past two weeks, which is completely unlike me. I just needed sleep on those crazy days. Fortunately though I’m done racing for the season so no harm done. It’s been nice to get out on the weekend and to lay down a little volume.
Last weekend a few of us rode a mini tour, 100 miles over two days. Day 1 was some remote riding, zero water, zero facilities on much of the route (spouses provided SAG) but a totally beautiful route. A couple of not very challenging mountain passes, high desert sage brush meadows, piney forests at the top of the passes, wildflowers galore. Day 2 we finished on the pier in Santa Barbara. Wine, lunch, and then the dog beach for the dogs. It was a great weekend.
Today I went out with a friend on a “gravel” ride on the mtb. It’s not really gravel but we rode an abandoned road called the Old Ridge Route. This used to be the main highway from LA to Bakersfield before the 5 freeway was built. Most of the road is gone nowadays but the part up in the mountains is still there, semi-maintained, in case of natural disaster. It’s mostly broken pavement, some dirt, some good pavement. But the huge appeal is that is just remote and quiet. Rare to see anyone else out there. Today was 30 miles and 3000 ft, just a perfect morning- great weather, great company, beautiful route, lively but not crushing pace.
Strength workout tomorrow then two days of work on the TT bike. Then 8 days of mountain biking in Utah with nothing on the schedule beyond “have fun”.

I've really been working on steady zone 3 and high cadence to keep the load off my knees but my volume hasn't been what it should; I have a long steep road race and I need big TSS weeks so its a bit of a conundrum. Unless something else pops up on the schedule this is my last race of the year and one I can do well in. There aren't many races for guys that can only go up very long hills.
My co worker is going into surgery 4 days before the race, so I may have to cover on call that weekend which means it may be a non issue.

Yesterday was a pretty great day on the bike. Had a bunch of invites to rides so I actually ended up riding twice. Morning ride left real early in the mornint and we did 90 miles with a couple of big climbs. Legs felt awesome. I'm having some power meter problems recently, so no data, but roughly 300 hrTSS in 5 hours. Lots of what I'll call threshold riding up the climbs and then pacing the group together.
Went home, food, a quick nap then back down to SLC for a birthday ride, THought I had the power meter issues figured out, but alas.. It was being spotty. I actually somehow managed to lose 10 miles of this ride on my wahoo elmnt.. Still managed to go faster up Emmigration canyon on my second ride of the day than my first. After that climb it was beer and food stops the rest of the evening. Fell over on some railroad tracks because I'm a dumbass, but no damage.
Overall, an awesome day on the bike with good company.

@Ttoc6 - I did a double-take when you mentioned SLC and Emigration Canyon in the same breath, but a search showed me there's one there too. We'll both be hitting the one NE of Preston, ID in a couple of months.

Today was just 1:15 on the mtb to spin the legs. Lots of fatigue from yesterday. 12 hours this week and was sick tuesday.. Not a bad week.

I didn't know there was one in Idaho! I guess I'll look forward to that then, cuz emi in SLC is one of my favorite climbs. (Also, the bottom is one of the top 10 attempted strava segments in the country.. https://www.strava.com/segments/7220839)

Another great Mt Laguna weekend riding' with my buddies. I hit the road for 3.5 hrs on Friday morning, then packed up and drove to the mtn and did a 90 min trail ride. Yesterday was 2.5 hrs MTB in the morning, another 1.5 in the evening. Capped it all off today with another 75 min of riding, mostly climbing for a pretty awesome ~15 min descent. Lots of beer, BBQ and snacks were enjoyed by all.

Saturday: Camp Pendleton and San Onofre Camp ride 3x10' threshold intervals with the remainder of the ride low to mid tempo. I hit 10 watts over on all 3 efforts on flat to rolling terrain in the drops. Yay me. Sunday: Coastal ride with was 4x90" anaerobic intervals sprinkled in plus tempo.

Did the Saturday new hammerfest. A new shop ride, and they had some of their racing team cat 1s on this ride. Pretty unusual to have guys of this caliber on any group ride outside of the one South of Dallas. So it was a lot of fun, traditionally is a race. I got to attack the field at the end as part of setting up our team's finish (teammate told me to go with overlapping attack). So that was fun.

Picked up my vacation rental bike, a Fuji sportive, which is meh (too relaxed fit) but it'll work. Went partially up my local mountain climb, its rainy and low 60s so the descent was chilly. Had a 10min NP of 303w, which I don't think ive ever done, and 20min NP of 285, over my 275 threshold. Curious to see how I do on the full climb

Just had a ~10 minute phone call with my coach as he's on a road trip to the great white north with his family. I swear, he's like 75% therapist and 25% coach, it's great. Amazing how much mood and motivation can change with such a simple interaction.

Completed my first cat 2 climb today, 'twas tough, the hour it took to get from my parents to the summit had me at .95 IF, the descent could have been crazy fast, but I was really conservative since I don't have any experience with that. I'd definitely be a lot stronger being forced to ride the terrain around here

Track day San Diego Velodrome. Warmup, accelerations and jumps then 3x4 flying laps with 15' RBI and then a kilo with a standing start. This is the type of w/o where a PM seems valuable as I can do post ride analysis and see how my lap power plus SDV is very oval with wide turns that makes power more constant versus the 250 m track at Carson.
As an added bonus, my wife joined me and did the same workout at the same time. So we set this up as the hound and hare drill. My goal was constant speed and effort over the 4 laps and she was to keep up or close if she could on the last lap. My wife tends to overcook her opening laps and fade at the end. I negative split my laps. So it seemed like a great workout for her to chase.
We went pretty fast and I hit 140% FTP constant power with an increase at the end on each effort. It is always amazing how much a standing start takes. When I did the kilo, I was really happy when it was over after 3 laps. All and all a great training day at the track.

Utah, on July 4th, has a traditional group ride up to Francis peak (one of the taller peaks in the Wasatch that you can drive/ ride up to). It's a 12-ish mile climb with 5k feet of climbing. All gravel. The road is in awesome shape and there was probably 150 people up at 6am to go ride bikes. Was a fun time.
I think I ended up with about the 6th fastest time on the day, but rode it all at my own pace, so never really saw any of the guys ahead of me until I was catching / passing them. I've been doing a lot of riding by power (or, in this case hr) recently and my body really likes it in comparison to chasing attacks. Hopefully it plays out and works well in up coming road races.
Happy 4th, y'all.

Glendora Mountain Road was closed to vehicles today so I went out there. Its one of my favorite climbs but a 40 minute drive, and there was a bike forums ride but I decided I was just going to ride solo as I wanted to go 'fast' and get home before 1300. There had to be 2,000+ riders going up, it was nuts. I passed a ton of them and got yelled at a ton, apparently its unfathomable to think someone would go faster than a blistering 1.85 w/kg pace.
I dropped about 100 national champions, so I must be on my game or we really suck now cus they seemed slow for national champions.
Took a few pics as well, I have no clue who any of those ppl are: https://www.strava.com/activities/1681385445

I may have seen @TMonk going up Torrey Pines hill as I was descending. A guy with a SDBC kit waived and wore sunglasses that looked like Tmonk's.

@Hermes I don't remember that so it may have been someone else. I did ride up Torrey at about 10:30 or so, riding a lime green steel fixie bike .

I did my same 4th of July routine for the last few years. Ride, BBQ and free beer at Karl Strauss (club sponsor) then more of the same with my cousins in Mission Bay. But with 60-70 miles of riding before, during and after . Rode my steel fixie road bike all day and had a blast.

Yeah that was probably the end of either organized ride from Karl Stauss. I hammered the front on my fixie bike (42/15 t) up to Leucadia, then turned around. Going up (north), I attacked out of the group by UCSD so I could have some daylight going into the Torrey descent

Rode up to Julian from home for about 55 miles with a good bit of climbing, did a few big gear efforts on the steadier climbs. Watched their 4th of July parade with the wife. Didn't get to ride back down, so all that elevation gain and no descending to show for it! Oh well, good workout anyway.

We drove up to Oceanside on the 4th with the goal of riding north through Camp Pendleton. When we got to the entrance, the marine informed us the base was closed to cyclists today. We went back to the car and rebooted the ride. We ended up going south and climbing Torrey Pines and then returning.

I did a very early July 4th ride with an actual national champ. A team mate won the 65+ (I think) time trial. https://www.strava.com/activities/1680189992#kudos
