Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

But that's a very good idea.
I have taken trains a few times into Chicago. I would definitely like to make a longer journey on one.

Indianapolis is a long way from the Yucatan peninsula via the land route.

I remain convinced that establishments put tomato slices on their L&CC to make it look like they're giving you a healthy portion. I also feel that tomato has no place in a bagel with L&CC. Ick.

Yes. It was fun. I got to drop my "heavy" friend as we crested the hills. He caught up, of course.

To do a group ride like IRL you need to make a Zwift Meetup (which is a by-invitation group ride) and we use an app called Discord to talk to each other. You use headphones/mic to talk. It's way fun. You should try it sometime. The hour went by super-fast!

I've done Philly to Seattle via Chicago three times. The second two trips were to the start of bike tours. The Empire Builder from Chicago to Seattle is a great ride if you do it at the time of year when it's still light when you pass through The Dells in Wisconsin, skirt Glacier National Park (saw mountain goats from the train) and make you way through the Cascades in WA during the final morning.

I probably should.

My current IRL meetup arrangement works for a couple of fake rides a week.

That's kind of where this goes, but I'll see if it's relatable.

I was being moused up in the infusion center this morning. At first it was just me. Nice and peaceful, except for the TV playing HGTV.

Half an hour or so in an old, skinny guy wanders in. It seemed he was supposed to be waiting in the waiting room, as he had not yet made his required stop with the PA, but somehow he had gotten buzzed in and was messing around with the infusion room coffee machine.

The nurse jokingly chided him for being well behind his scheduled appointment. I think she was annoyed because they close at noon on Fridays, but rather than say that directly, she mitigated, with teasing.

He sat at the opposite side of the room as me.

A little later a middle age lady comes in and sits on his side. Soon she joins in the banter with the coffee guy and nurse. She turns out to be much noisier than him. Guy was messing with the paper work we were required to fill out because "it's a new year." Anyway, for some reason he asked for scissors. After he used them, as the nurse was returning to her station, the loud woman stopped her and tried to get her to cut the sleeve on her blouse for the upcoming injection. wut

Anyway, while all this tomfoolery is going on across the room, I'm minding my own business, reading my book or trying to nap. It didn't take long for loud lady to seize upon the contrast and deemed my side of the room the "good side," meaning quiet and not joshing with the nurse, I assume.

Then the needlephobe came in. She brought in her husband, apparently for moral support. He looked like the ZZ Top guitarist and oddly just stood there the whole time, rather than sit in one of the chairs. After a little random back and forth, it came out that needlephobe didn't eat bacon because she had become a "Hebrew" and then her conversation with the loud lady was off to the races on theology. I'm not sure why you would talk to a complete stranger at the doctor's office about that, but hey, it's more substantive than "what's for lunch?"

During this conversation the loud lady made another reference to the "good side." Then finally before I left, she came at me again about my quietness.

I'm guessing I'm not alone here, but for me whenever I'm in a social setting with someone new, the first time they comment on me not saying much, I'm like, "yeah, you're right." But then it gets more every time they say it thereafter.

The End.
I’m a schmoozer and a banterer, but I don’t like it when people get aggressive like that.

Ordered an expensive MIPS helmet to replace the cracked one and will replace my beloved Gore vest, which got shredded, in International Fred Yellow. I think I can get through the rest of the season without replacing the tights. I will take my beautiful Ibex jacket to the Korean ladies to get the holes darned.

However, what is currently sold as a bagel in NYC bears only a passing resemblance to the ancient food of my people, which was much denser, chewier, smaller, and less crusty. Something of the kind still exists in Montreal.

Yes. To San Antonio by train, and the rest of the way by bus. Mexico takes its buses seriously. More folks travel by by bus than by private car. They are luxurious and on time. And still reasonably priced. Plus. I have a senior citizen card which gives me half off, thus making it almost stealing.
And, if touring, it's still 60 miles a day. I would certainly look into getting a dedicated touring bike for such an adventure. I'm in communication with a tourer from England. He's currently approaching Villahermosa, and needs to replace all four cones, cassette and chain when he arrives here. I'm scoping out sources for such.

Still riding! What good fortune you have. Your nemesis is likely still out there too, riding the same trajectory. Perhaps you can tag him/her by the paint on the bumper. Or the chagrin on their face, when they see you're still alive.

That place in Park Slope was/is the shizz. They are not the bready monstrosities that pass for bagels in much of the US.

Someone recommended DD to me for a bagel. Said they were great. They were not.

There's a smoked ham steak with a maple syrup rub in the oven. The aroma has made me forget what I was previously craving.

That sounds like a wonderful opportunity to have pancakes with butter and maple syrup as a side dish.

Ew.

Bagel Hole - that's the name of the place in Park Slope (I think). They only make and sell fresh bagels and, as such, will scoff and refuse if you ask for your bagel to be toasted.
