Just Making the (Railroad) Grade...

Friday's ride home. The crossing alarm went off just as I built up speed to climb the grade, and then the arm started to drop a moment later. Usually an approaching train will sound its horn for this and other nearby crossings; I'll hear it and I can modify my route by a few blocks to a street that goes under the tracks. But Friday's crossing alarms were a surprise.

As an added bonus I tagged behind another cyclist for a little bit.

Enjoy!

Bah...you should just ride down the tracks.

Train engineers talk tough, but they always flinch first

My first route to work involved 3 rail road crossings and a total of 7 sets of tracks. I really hated waiting for trains then.

Rails to trails conversions are easy cycling because rail engineers kept the slope angles low..

But RR grade-Crossings are another story .

I had a similar encounter on my commute just the other day - one of the trails crosses a railroad and just as I was on the verge of crossing (too late to stop) the bells and lights started doing their thing. It wasn't a close call or anything, but I was sure surprised/startled.
