For downhill and other more.. sketchy disciplines this could be more useful than fulltime armour. Of course the sheet physical movement of someone riding DH or freeriding might cause it to inflate, so not sure how useful it would be

Just curious as to how it knows to inflate in case of a crash, and not when you're bending over to tie your shoes or something.

I hate to be "that guy", but if the cyclist in the demo really trusted it he wouldn't be breaking his fall by pushing his hand out and banging his elbow. Good thing he was going slowly and falling on a thick mat.

I don't really blame him for using a mat, which is common sense, but if he fell on the road at a high speed that same way he'd have injured himself and the airbag would not have prevented it. I was just flabbergasted at using that video as a demo - to me it would illustrate how the airbag does NOT work.
I could see how it would be useful if you fell on your back, or a decent side break-fall, but my take from the video is that most people instinctively avoid it. I'd really want the bag around my shoulders and upper torso, maybe my hips also, but not around the middle like that.

In all fairness, the manual states that it’s only supposed to be used/turned on when cycling, so it is a known weakness. There’s been some debate as to why the didn’t sell it with some sort of transponder system that only allows it to be activated while on the bike.

Motorcycle racers have had airbag technology for a while now.
I believe they have devices for lean angle and g force for signaling the air bags to deploy
