I should have taken pics as I went along.

I used 2 of these straps from Homedepot that I wasn't using. Was able to make 2 sets from the straps. I wanted material that was heavy enough to withstand boots being mashed into them and easy to adjust and husky straps seemed perfect. $5 each at homedepot for the 36" ones.



This pic shows the direction of the straps and which way they need to be folded.


Here is how I secured them on the alloy pedals.



The white tape is used to hold zipties along the side of the strap to help keep them upright when I step into them. The 2 cutoff zipties on the back of the pedal are the tabs to flip the pedal over to get in. The pedals didn't come with tabs and my boots aren't nimble enough to flip the pedal without them.

I started with a piece of velcro about 8" long (both sides). I used an exacto knike to make the holes in the velcro. I needed 2 nuts, bols washers for the back of the pedal and used the reflecters with the bolts in them for the front. About 15 zipties were used to make tabs, and extra grip on the front as well where the folded material came above the teeth on the pedal.

The straps sofar have worked extremely well. Easy to adjust to get a proper fit and easy to step in and out of. I havn't slipped out of them, which was a big problem with my boots and clips/straps and they hold my feet securely on the pedals when I resist to slowdown. I am really happy woth the results as powergrips were the perfect solution to my cold feet problem, but at $50+ abit much for 2 bikes.

Luckily we don't get anything too devestating towards drivetrain here but my frontline bike is my Gunnar Crosshairs.


My "beater" bike, this one will typically come out when I want something more playful (it has flat bars) like if I am riding my cx bike on mtb trails and conditions are especially bad or if I just feel the need to do some SS riding.

This here is my winter ride. Because I volunteer @ a community bike shop I was able to build it for $0 out of 95% post-consumer parts (my old winter bike got stolen, it too 95% post consumer). I have ridden MTN bike in the winter before but that "floating" that folks seem to find desirable I found disagreeable. I like my 38mm tires, they cut through the snow nicely. I also never use studded tires and I can still rip around on freshly Zamboni-ed river skating trails like nobodies business. Winnipeg is the coldest metropolis (city w/ a population of over 500 000) in the world. My coldest ride was at -45 C (not including wind chill).

Was wonderful to have a warm and cozy shop in which to do what were some really minor jobs.

Tonight it got a little paint on the rear dropouts, and it's looking pretty good! Just the white is new on the back as one of the rear dropouts was fixed in the bike's previous life.

Bought a used Mtb with the idea of finally having a FS Hardtail with modern front shock and brakes (maybe compete a bit with other old geezers this summer). However I didn't want to wait for spring to try the new ride so I bought a set of Schwalbe Icespiker Pro and made yet another winterbike. (I'll try to not take this one where all the nasty salt is). Had a nice ride today on forestroads and I really like the tires. The Nokian Freddie lite's on my commuter are wider and float a bit better but the Schwalbe tires corners better and have a more aggressive grip.

My winter bike has been a work in progress ever since I purchased it.



I started with a stock 2007 Raleigh One Way.



The front wheel consists of a Sturmey Archer XFDD Dynohub (with generator and drum brake), and a Sun CR 18 rim, with heavy gauge spokes.





The rear wheel is consists of the brand new Sturmey Archer S3X three speed fixed gear hub. Mated to an Alex Sub rim (I wanted to get another Sun CR 18 for the rear wheel, but I found a good deal on a complete wheel set, so I just went with the rim that came with the hub).





Tires are Kenda Klondike 35mm (studded). I'd like to go with a smaller diameter, but that was all that was in stock when I ordered last year.



For lights I have an Inoled Extreme headlight and a B & M taillight.






This bike is a beast. With the two extra large hubs, it might be one of the heaviest fixed gear bikes that you're ever likely to ride. But it's safe, and it's totally bombproof. If I'm going to be commuting thirty miles in a day on a bike in the winter, I want to know that it isn't going to let me down at any point.

She ain't pretty, what with missing handlebar tape on the left side and all. But she's a winter bike, so that's to be expected.
