Spoiler
Well Murphy’s Law struck and I ran over a roofing? nail 7-8mm just off center.
Lesson learned- carry your patch kit. **** happens.

Tire sidewall wax
Does that help?

I spent over an hour installing new Schwalbe tires with tire levers and popped a tube. I took the tires to a LBS and the mechanic told us new tires require wax along the inner seam to loosen the tire over the rim. They installed them in 10 minutes without tire levers.
Does that help?
Yes, I have put a bit of dish soap along a rim edge to help like that.
also, putting a new tire in the sun to get all warm helps sometimes
plus, there is a technique that can help, as in this youtube vid
I think most of us have done what you did, some tire/rim combinations can be a real chore. The technique in the video really does help, as by squishing in the tire towards the middle of the rim, we tend to gain just those few mm's that make the impossible, possible. its good to practice it in a nice warm , not rushed environment, so if you have to deal with it on the road, you'll know how to deal with a tough tire mounting.

Thanks for this video. I did go to Schwalbe's website but didn't see anything like this. I wish I had watched it when I needed to, but better late than never. Cheers.

You're welcomew no problem.
I know one doesn't have the urge to deal with the frustration, but some practice runs are worth it if you are going to do some touring, just so you know you can do it without damaging the tube.
Also if you've never patched a tube, good to practice that as well.
Cheers
