Kaka'ako is so nice since they re-did it a few years back. Makes me homesick thinking about it (honolulu ex-pat)

As you leave the elevator at the end of the day, you say to a co-worker, "enjoy your commute." Then you remember, he has to drive home.

After a morning ride in the snow with single digit (F) temperatures, you get to say to a co-worker, "Yes, I rode in today."

This morning I was able to ride through the shipping gate (normally closed but recently smashed by truck), spot an open door (with ramp), cruise in through the plant, and park about eight feet away from where I'm sitting.

If more people had that option, they may consider riding a bike as well. The VIP treatment.

Hearing two co-workers, neither ride, discuss your riding.

The conversation starts off with you talking about your morning ride in with co-worker1.

Co-worker1: ". . . . . Yeah, I'm thinking of getting a bike and start riding. Maybe we could ride together."

Co-worker2: cutting you off, "You wouldn't be able to ride with him."

This ignites guy, locker room, trash talking between Co-worker1 and Co-worker2.

Co-worker2: "Dude, I'm not saying you can't ride a bike. I'm just saying, I've seen him <pointing at me> and he doesn't ride a bike. He flies it."

I'm not fast, it's just that these two probably haven't been on a bike since they were 15.

Riding to/from the post office in pouring rain...smelling the rain, hearing the wind, watching the critters...and loving it, much to everyone else's puzzlement.

Being in a great mood when I get to work, because I get to have fun getting there (in any weather). Some of my coworkers have a lot of the "I hate life" thing going on, on top of overall grumpyness-I feel sorry for them. Sometimes I even need to reign in my bliss, or I get a rath of "grumpy" from a few.

Having co-workers stop by my office to see if I biked in that day, and I did.

Having co-workers tell me they are thinking of biking in some day.

Having a co-worker feel sorry for me because it is raining, but then when I tell him I'd rather be riding in the rain than sitting at work or in a car, he agrees.

Biking in the winter on a particularly cold or snowy day, and hearing co-worker's surprise when they see I rode in.

Filling up my car's gas tank once per month.

Eating just about ANYTHING I want, and not having to worry about it.

Having my wife tell me it's okay if I spend $$ on bike stuff, since I ride the bike to work almost every day.

This reminds me of an old "grumpy" (although in a weird sort of likable way) co-worker I had at a previous job. His name was Dick. If you greeted him in the morning with "good morning Dick" he'd invaribly reply "F%@k you". And if you greeted him with "F%@k you Dick" he'd invaribly reply with a very chipper "Gooood morning!"

At this time of year, on a clear day, at the right time of the month, there's a stretch of highway right beside the bay on my route where I can look to my left front and see the sunrise over the hills and look to my right rear to see the full moon as it sets over the bay.

They're on strike again? Or are you talking about 2 years ago?

Man, when they went on strike, the freeways got majorly clogged (I was driving at the time). I thought Honolulu got more congested in the roadways... what part of HNL do you live in?

commuting happiness... breathing the air, smelling the grass, watching the sun rise over mt. hood, wind whipping through your body, endorphine rush, and coming home to my gf and cat

Sadly, today will not be one of those days But there's always another time

Getting home in after a cold, dark, rainy ride in December.

Seeing the sunrise over one mountain range and the set over another on the same day.

Riding in a gusty wind storm that sets the dogs to barking and feeling alive and in the world.

Getting to work at 7:15 wide awake and feeling good and listening to coworkers ***** about the traffic.

Tailwinds uphill.

Looking over my shoulder on the way to work at the top of the bridge and seeing Mt. Wellington lit by the morning sun.

Saying "Morning" to the usual suspects as they cross the bridge in the opposite direction, also on their bikes, but on the way into town.

Turning the corner and knowing its a tailwind for the second half of the trip

Trying to hear my bike over the rushing air, and it being tuned well enough so I cant.

I like it in the early morning when I solitarily glide through stretches of the bike path with only a full moon to navigate through the top of ground fog and the mystery of what lurks below.
I like the mystery heading down a totally darken path surrounded with its haunting sounds that awakens imagination.
The best part is fellow employee check on me not for my health but for a weather check.
They know if I am early the wind and weather is good.

To me, commuting happiness is two things:

a) Not depending on the bus, the weather, or anything else but my legs and my bike/clothes.

b) Having more energy, and less stress.

Taking Boogs point a step further--commuting happiness is self-reliance. I can fix just about anything that goes wrong with my ride to work. Few cagers can say the same.
