From Facebook: Day 16 midday update.....continued off and on communication. A few more smiles, trying to tell me something (really need to learn to lip read....I clearly stink at it), with some minor agitation. Seeing some additional improvement in labs. Plan for the day is making some additional adjustment in sedation, finding the right mix of pain meds (non IV), and working on letting him breathe some on his own. Doc liked what he was seeing this morning, as am I. Got a raised eyebrow and smile when I told him about everyone's support and prayers!!

How can I find them on FB? I have an account I rarely use but would like to follow the progress without expecting BF members to contact them THEN post the update here.

Nevermind. I did some sleuthing and found them. I sent a message to his wife asking her to add me as a friend. Thanks for pointing out FB was having updates.

Praying for MMach5's full recovery, support and strength also for his wife and family.

Thanks very much for the update. I was wondering how he was doing. Sounds like the injuries are getting better, but the infections are still causing trouble. I wish him and his family all the best in their recovery.

Thanks for that, bergerandfries. I read some of of the other entries on her blog. What a sweet and lovely family who sure have had some tough setbacks. Hope folks are generous on chipin. I'm sure they can use the help. The mmach's are definitely in my thoughts and prayers.

Improvement! Mike was able to speak his first words since the collision yesterday, and while he's been having some stomach issues, the infections and bone mending seems to be going well. He's still pretty heavily sedated, and can't say much that is coherent, but spoken words mean so much to a wife and kids that haven't heard him speak for 33 days. Happy Fathers Day to all out there...

...Michael slept well last night, has seen PT, OT and speech (swallowing) today, has napped a few times, and is otherwise keeping me on my toes!! Still no word on what we might be doing with the aneurysm, but should hear something by the end of the day

I hope they get the driver.

Dallas/Ft. Worth is the worst city in the nation for cycling, and from my 4 year experience living in TX, I can't help but wonder if this "accident" was quite deliberate.

Update: He is set to be discharged from the hospital on 7/20 to go home and continue rehab.

"
Day 57 afternoon update.....this may be the best update yet!! The group met this morning after reevaluating Michael and came to us with a new discharge date as we expected.....though, what we thought would be a discharge date a week later than the original date (7/28) since we missed the last week of therapy, turned out to be them coming to tell us that Michael is doing so well, they are moving our discharge date to a week EARLIER than it was!!!! New expected discharge date is 7/20....a week from Friday!!!"

That post his from his wife on FB. There is also a photo of him as he is now.

Jeff, I told him about this thread and he's looking forward to logging in and reading it.

I went to go see Mike for 30min today at the rehab hospital wing. Discharge date has been set for July 20, which is amazing, considering how bad things were two weeks ago, even. Mike is lucid, well spoken, remembers all things except the day of the collision and most of his time in the hospital. I didn't ask about any pain he might be in, but he wasn't in pain while sitting and talking to me. His Physical Therapy has him using a walker to hop around on his right leg (no weight on the left leg for another week). Now the amazing parts:
He went out to diner tonight with his wife because he's getting around so well.
He is going home on Sunday for a test flight of things that might need to be changed around his home or things he needs to work on in rehab before he goes home for good.

Next week I am going to figure out a way to get some hardwood floors installed in Mike's house for the wheelchair and walker, so if you are in DFW, know how to install wood floors or have a contact for getting material donated, speak up. I am working an angle now, and will let you know what I pull together.

It's fantastic to see Mike up and around. No doubt his level of fitness has had a lot to do with his resilience.

Wow. Amazing. The outlook was so grim such a short time ago! Good work, medical team, eh? He's got much more healing to do, of course. Still, very very good to hear.

Yesterday they posted a photo of Mike and the wife out for a meal at a local cafe. I hadn't checked in for a week or two so I was surprised to see him out in gen-pop. Great to see him "up and around."

Yeah, this is awesome. I haven't checked their Facebook page in a couple of weeks. This is great news. Yeah, the doctors did an amazing job but I guess he was very lucky too. The injuries were terrible. I'm sure he's many months away from full recovery but I'm so glad he wasn't permanently disabled.
