Today I wore merino long pants underwear plus corduroy pants, merino t-shirt plus a dress shirt, a tubular scarf over my ears and jaw, a hat, and heavy lobster claw mittens. The starting temperature was about 29°F. I wore summer cycling shoes and an athletic winter jacket. Overall, I was too warm, and I didn't pedal very hard. My mittens are part of the problem. I usually wear mittens that are less warm, but I feared they would not be warm enough. Maybe they would have been better. My toes were cold. I'm not going to try to solve that last problem yet, but I will soon.

32°F air temps but the 14mph average wind speed w/ gusts up over 30mph made the wind chill/Real Feel® 20°F!

I wore:

I use barmitts (or 'pogies') from late fall to start of spring. They make a huge difference. I have found tossing or wedging a 'zippo' hand warmer inside one of them also helps..maybe a bit of overkill but it's fun having a little gas furnace inside my barmitts..

It was 24ºF when I headed out to my rehearsal in Brooklyn this morning. I wanted to make sure I wouldn't get cold. I wore my wool t-shirt and my wool long pants underwear and a wool long sleeve undershirt. Then I wore a dress shirt, a sweater, and a jacket. On my feet, I wore thick wool socks and work boots. Forget the cleated shoes. I wore big ski mittens. I wore my Buff (circular scarf) over my neck and jaw, and a wool hat under my SKI helmet.

It worked, and it was too much. I had to pedal gently so as not to get warm. But no complaints. I learned from it, not only about what to wear and what not to wear but also that I really can be OK. It takes a long time to suit up and suit down, too.

Today, 22°F with a wind-chill/Real Feel® of 16°F (once again, the wind was at my back...not sure how I'm gonna fare on the return trip into that headwind tonight!)

But I think I may have actually been overdressed:
- lightweight waffle-knit polyester turtleneck base layer
- Early Winters Furnace Shirt (a thick fleece-y polypro jersey that I usually wear as a base layer)
- Assos 851 AirJack jacket
- Giro merino wool winter cap
- Perfomance shorts
- Pearl Izumi Amphib bib tights
- merino wool socks
- Answer winter cycling boots
- Specialized Sub Zero glove system (an impressive-looking but not-so-impressive-performing combination of a space-age high-tech glove liner and a generic thin fleece-lined ski glove outer shell)
- generic glove liners underneath all ^^^that (due to the aforementioned not-so-impressive-performance of the two-part system...so yeah, three gloves today)
- helmet
- glasses

Both the Airjack and the Furnace Shirt punch well above their weight class in terms of warmth; combined with the ample torso coverage of the Amphib bibs I think I probably could have skipped the base layer and still been perfectly comfortable today.

Well, the bibs make a modest difference; my point was more that the AirJack and the Furnace Shirt make a huge difference, especially when combined.

oh OK, gotcha. Saturday, w temps in the low 20s, with the sun going down, I got out for 2 hours. legs had 2 simple layers but up top I wound up w/ 5 layers! 3 w/ sleeves, 2 w/o. it all worked OK but surprised me how many layers it wound up being

1- long sleeve zip neck poly base
2- long sleeve fleece shirt
3- thin fleece vest
4- windstopper jacket
5- vi-viz vest

I ride in the NE US, lots of hills, temps range between single digits and 30s. Often hitting 25+ on downhills and freezing. Bike shop sold me a bontrager outer shell (wearing base layer) stated it would break the wind, not even close. I am interested in recommendations for outer shell that is wind proof or close to it. I dont mind some chill but what I have tried so far is not enough. thanks

not sure if I understand. you're wearing a single outer shell & a single base layer in temps & speeds as described? I don't think the issue is the outer shell, meaning I wold want something in between those 2 simple layers. something that actually insulates, like my fleece shirt, for example

I bought a Louis Garneau base vest years ago and love it for the conditions you're talking about. This vest will not vent sweat, so be smart about layering.

the rain may turn to freezing rain but I doubt it, cuz it's been above freezing all day
I'll be home before it turns to sleet
thinking if I start by 6 & back in my car by 8 I can escape scot-free!

EDIT: got caught in the rain, temps remained steady at 32-33 degrees for several hours.loving my Showers Pass helmet cover & Transit pants. wasn't as bad as it sounds. didn't even wear gloves for the last hour, thanks to the bar mitts. no balaclava, just a thin knit hat under the helmet. it was soaked with sweat & at one point I took it off to wring it out, but put it back on cuz it was still keeping me warm enough

we're not nearly as cold as you guys, but so glad I'm getting my money's worth out of the helmet w the face shield. got a cpl nice pics of it this weekend

Yesterday, I took the annual Brooklyn Sheldon Brown Memorial Ride with about six others. We started at the Grand Army Plaza and turned around in Coney Island. The temperature was about 33ºF and breezy. I wore wool long underwear, a wool t-shirt, a flannel shirt, my jacket, cylindrical Buff scarf, wool cycling cap (under helmet), lightweight mittens, and cycling shoes. My fingers and toes got slightly cold but not painfully so. We spent a long time at a legendary pizzeria (Totonno's) so warming up in the middle probably helped. 30 miles round trip for me.

Yes, they're summer mountain bike shoes. I really love them except that they are so cool. I always wear wool socks. If it had been slightly colder, I would have worn my work boots which are not cycling specific. My commuter bike (which I rode) has commuter pedals with SPD on one side. Most others on the ride wore street clothes, too, including light boots and the like. We didn't mess around. I didn't know anyone on the ride, and since it was initiated by the bike coop (NYC Mechanical Gardens), I guessed people wouldn't be wearing cycling kit, and I was mostly right. Not that I think anyone would make judgments of each other.
