Columbus rider

I woke up this morning and peeked out the window expecting snow on the ground, instead it just looked cold and icy. I thought about riding to work as I went through my morning ritual. Finally I decided to go for it. My son dropped me off near the Olentangy bike trail and I tentatively pedaled with my clips loose. Although the trail had a light snow cover and the temperature was in the 20s, I felt pretty steady. After a few miles I was riding at a good clip and starting to daydream. Near Henderson road where the trail goes under the bridge my front wheel hit a slick spot and I went down hard on my left side. I was amazed at how fast it happened, I did not have time to react or tuck... man asphalt is even harder when it's frozen. I landed on my left knee and hip and slide to a stop. Luckily no one saw me go down, you know how embarassing it is to explain to a total stranger your alright except for your ego. I limped around for a minute cussing and trying to come to grips with the fact that I talked myself into riding on ice. I put my chain back on the big ring and slowly, oh so slowly began to ride again. My knee and hip felt fine and I made it to work without another crash. I put ice on my knee just in case and went to work. Normally I love the ride home in the dark, but I was dreading it all day. Reality sank in and I called my wife for a ride home, dark and ice a deadly combination! Anyone have a suggestion about tires for my road bike or my hybrid to cope with slick trails?
Ohio trails are great, but our weather makes every ride an adventure.

Rode 3.2 miles yesterday. Very icy so it was slow going but nice to get out for a little bit.

1/8 easy spinning but a long one of 30 miles at an average of 14mph, I hate those recovery rides!

I rode 16 miles today on my MTB rig. The roads were awful. You'd think that a wealthy suburb would at least have the busiest road (rt 6) and one of the wealthiest subdivisions (Westwinds) plowed neatly, but no.
I was at maximum heart rate for about 1.5 miles today (which took about 25 minutes to get through) I'm in the granny gear, a 22x32 (I think, I dare look anywhere but ahead of me and at my shift indicators) and just barely getting through 5 in deep snow-covered roads. The tread of my tires got caked up with snow, and I was basically skidding across the snow.

It was funny because I saw three runners out today, and they probably thought the same thing I did when I saw them, "Hey look! Another crazy like me!" We all felt like some kind of weird family whom isn't stopped from exercising when the weather dips below 70º.

I came home and shoveled my driveway which was 6in deep in snow and shoveled the hard half of my neighbor's since his back is messed up.

i tried to do my first ride of the year. Got 200ft and my body said no, I couldnt turn the pedals, I got sick to my stomach, and my limbs went numb. I'm still not well, and hopefully it goes away before i have to go to the big H. and im scared of big H's.

I was however, able to do about an hour at rays - before i got too fatigued.

I rode 22 miles on my Trance on the road. The temps were in the high 20's, I think.

After that I logged in 45 minutes on my TCR on the trainer. It was pretty taxing because I had the trainer on high resistance and I was grinding in the 53x12 while standingh for 3-6 minutes at a time.

I rode around town (Napoleon, OH - halfway between Florida and Texas) this past weekend. Temperature was in the teens with not that much wind. For you guys out doing 30 miles in this weather - more power to you, but I guess at 50 I'm too old for that crap.

I'm going to ride tomorrow in the single-digit temps.
My previous record was 14º. I'm gonna MTFU.
Man the f*ck up.

I rode for a little less than an hour last night. The bank thermometer read 11F on the way out and 8F on the return. It was a group ride of 9. Our ride leader rode 33 miles! The lowest windchill was -3F. https://wrcs.blogspot.com/2009/01/2009-wrcs-ride-18.html

I rode 15 miles last night with a -20F wind chill. The highlight was a unintentional two-wheel drift with sparks flying off my front studded tire as it slid across the pavement.

Of course I feel like an amateur compared with my friend Robert Herriman. He's already ridden 629 outdoor miles as of January 15th.

I hit the trainer yesterday with amazing results.

After 3 weeks off and limited high-stress riding since, my 3 minute peak power is 10 watts less than it was at my peak. This test was done after only 10 minutes of warmup, 3 minutes of stretching, and I'm about 5 pounds lighter than I was at my peak.

The bad? My 'guads' are smaller in diameter, but much more defined.

Time for a little up date, weather is bad (for cycling any way) so this is just trainer miles.
1/10=25, 1/11=11 took a few days off, really needed it too, 1/17=21, 1/18=25 (YTD274)

First rule of the Great Midwest forum; there is no such thing as trainer miles. Second rule; there is no such thing as trainer miles.

Later.

I used to group them together. Then I used to keep track separately (road vs trainer). Then one day someone said, "well...there are no miles on a trainer. I mean it's not like you went anywhere," when I decided it was all about the time. Miles on trainer mean nothing. Sorry.

Trainer miles? What next? Notices of people going to spinning class?

I only rode 10 miles last night as after suffering yet another Eggbeater pedal mechanical. The good news is 14F is starting to feel downright balmy.

Took my mtn bike down to the towpath. The guy with skis coming off it laughed and said good luck. I made it about 2 feet. It was pretty much 12" of fresh powder, and impossible to ride in. So... with my tire pressure already down to 10ish psi, I put in about 7.5 road miles, with about 600 ft of climbing.

24 miles today, my first outdoor ride since the weekend after Christmas. It was really cold and windy, but the roads were in fine condition. It took me an hour to warm up once I got inside.

Indoor TT tonight. I went way too slow in the beginning, had the fastest uphill time split, and the fastest time of the last part of the "course".
I got edged out by a few seconds. I'll be 30+ seconds faster next week.

I also won the "Best Entrance" award. Like a normal TT, I had my hands in the drops, arms fully extended, leaned back and hovering over the seat, ready to crank the pedals and pull the bars at the same time.
I put in so much power (my PowerTap said 980w) in one second that the trainer folded up and I got propelled toawrds the computer screen in front of me.
