Remove glue off tubular tyres

Hi there
I have a 1980 Raleigh Competition with tubular steel wheels. Bought new tyres and thought I’d get them fitted at a bike shop to as I wanted a professional job. Anyway the shop screwed them up and tried to give me the wheels back with hardened glue all over the rims and tyres. I told them I wouldn’t accept that and they should try to fix them but a week later they’re saying they can’t do anything with them. Does anyone have any tips on how to remove the glue from the tyres without damaging the tyres ? Thanks

From the rims (brake track), I'd use acetone. Apply carefully and rub with a clean cloth. Work slowly and patiently on small portions at a time. Keep the acetone away from your tire.

For the tire, please provide a photo or two to show how much glue is on the sidewall. My inclination would be to simply ride the tires as is, with no effort to remove a small patch of glue. You said "all over the rims and tires", which sounds maybe worse than that.

Makes you wonder why you would hesitate to glue your own tires, doesn't it?

I'd like to see a pic as well. Especially of the tubular steel wheels.
Anyone with 1980 Raleigh should do their own tire mounting.

Thanks for the advice ! Can’t post photos as forum rules says as a newbie I have to have ten posts before uploading photos - but the wheels are bad ! Crusta of glue on the sidewalks to the rims in multiple places - the yellow part of the new continental tyres are black with dirty glue. Yep - you know , a car and motorcycle mechanic and I could have definitely done a better job and was almost going to until the local shop said £30 for the labour - I thought let the professionals do it seeings I’ve never glued tyres before - we live and learn !

Live and learn.... you can do it. Just don't over-do it.
If you are not racing consider Tubasti glue.

I certainly will do my own tyres in the future ! Kind of kicking myself now but I wanted my bike for the local Iron Man competition and two days before I felt the back tyre making a noise which was where the glue had broken away - i didn’t have enough time to research what glue I needed plus didn’t want to risk rushing the job and screwing it up due to lack of experience but already had the tyres at home that I bought on eBay then local shop said they would do it overnight - of course went back the next day and weren’t ready so did the Iron Man on my Kona instead (I was supposed to be a part of a Vintage racer group- looked a dick on my modern Road bike) - like we said - live and learn !

Depending on what glue it is... you don't need to remove all of it.
I don't imagine there is really that much on the tire... just looks bad.
Get the big stuff off the rims..... acetone and a dull screwdriver always worked for me.
Maybe your pro shop forgot to pre-mount the tire without glue overnight to stretch the tires.

I use either lacquer thinner or acetone, whatever's on the shelf. I'd guess that the shop mechanic who did this has never done it before. Shops tend to assign unpleasant work to the least experienced. My 2 least favorite jobs are installing fenders and gluing new tubulars.

Steel rims on a 1980 Competition? Steel tubular rims? Wow! That's real step back from the Weinmann alloy rims that came with Competitions here in the US. Here, in 1980, they were called Competition Gran Sports.

The shop is not standing by their work? Won't reimburse you for new wheels?

I had a Competition back in the day. Full lavender (but Carlton-shop built!). Like this:

Wheel saga still continues

The shop refunded the labour cost - I supplied the tyres - but they’re ruined - spent £70 on a pair of Continental Giros and they look worse then the 10 year old tyres that were on previously - I cleaned the rims so I can brake at least but the can’t eat the glue off the side walls !!! Would post photos but as a newbie the forum won’t let me. Pretty gutted about my tyres and think maybe I should make the shop buy me new tyres
