Chainline affects chain wear, sometimes shifting, a little frictional loss and a few other smaller issues. Q-factors can affect knee wear and life. Knee replacement costs radically more than chain replacement, even full drivetrain replacement. (The deductable alone probably would cover drivetrains for all my bikes for the rest of my life.)

In my latest Q-factor reduction, I exceeded the ability of the FD to push the chain onto the inner chainring from anywhere on the cassette. I now have a "pusher", a strip of 1/8" flatbar stuck to the inner surface of the outer FD cage. Fortunately my digital shifting has a good enough feedback loop to do the many required FD adjustments to alleviate rub. (DT shifters. Operated by digits, fingers and thumb. Direct link to the computer/brain.)

So, in the interest of my knees, I am happy to sacrifice the perfect chainline.

I have this frame to build as a winter trainer because it was cheap and came close to matching my regular roadie (except for having 135mm dropouts). My current bike also has shorter chainstays, 130mm dropouts, and a Q factor of 147, which gives me no issues. I知 sketching this up to play with the math, but it seems that if I tried a 68 x 107 B.B. I would add 4mm to the Q factor, matching what I currently ride. As an added benefit, I値l pick up 2mm of the 2.5mm difference between a 130 and a 135 dropout on the drivetrain side. That's what I think I would do too. The 135 dropouts would be the tipping factor for me.

I fully agree with Andrew, by the way. Chainline matters but I think that it's real easy to overstate how much.

Thanks! I think I知 going to give it a shot with the 107 and see how good my math was. At the very worst I wind up needing another bottom bracket. This has been a helpful group!
