Oh, I forgot to post my other fixie. This is a 1975 Viscount that started out as a ten-speed. For a while, I had the Sturmey Archer 3-speed fixed gear hub. That was fun but not all that useful. Now it's a regular one-speed fixie. I'm thinking of converting it to SSFW to make commutes easier.

The handlebar end facing you is is a brass bell.

New carbon wheels put this bike right at 15 lb including pedals, cages and GPS mount.

Light Bicycle rims, Mack hubs and CX-Ray spokes were built up by ProWheelBuilder.com.

The rims are 25 mm outside, 17.9 mm inside, 35 mm deep with grooved Graphene brake track. I've yet to ride it as I'm off the bike due to injury.

I just finished building my ss out of the bin parts. As I am under 10 post, I was unable to post pics
Frame and fork was given away for free.
Tyres and tubes cost $44, I could use the spare tyres but I want a bit puncture protection
Ss conversion kit $25
Dead weight is 8.68kg. After installing rear rack, lights and bottle, it jumps to 11kg

Go @50voltphantom! Post some pics and results! Still haven't tried cross, looks fun. I like how it blends fitness and athleticism (skill). I've always been pretty athletic/not clumsy (haha) and think I could be quick over obstacles.

@bikejoel, my wife and I have those tires on our tandem. I like 'em. Bike and humans weigh 332 lbs combined, so we inflate them to 80 psi. What pressure do you run?

I only have about 50 miles on them but I’m running them at 80 psi as well. Seems about right for me.
To be honest they weren’t my first choice but decent 26”tires are getting scarce. The reviews were favorable and a found them for a good price online. So far I like them. They roll almost as nice as the specialized fat boys 26” x 1.2

@bikejoel, that sounds like too much pressure for a single person. Try less. More pressure does not mean easier pedaling. There is a point at which increasing pressure adds to rolling friction.

Nice bike. I had a Viscount back in the late 1970s/early 1980s.

A Sturmey Archer 3 speed hub is a great thing if set up correctly. The middle gear is direct drive so no additional friction losses. Top gear is middle plus 33% for powering down hill, and bottom gear is middle less 25% for winching up the steeper hills. That means you can ride single speed in middle gear most of the time, but you have options on the hills.

Unfortunately, this ancient wisdom was lost many years ago, and many are set up with the wrong gear range, meaning that you spend most of the time in top, losing efficiency through the planetary gears.

As I mentioned. I’ve only put 50 miles on them. I’m still experimenting with the ride / air pressure. This bike will mainly be used for street use so I doubt that I’ll drop them too low.
Thanks for the insight

Amazing bike.
I'm confused about the currency exchange rate. How much $USD$ were the Mack hubs?

New cranks and pedals! I regret the bar tape. It's Specialized HD wrap. They make decent tape but it's more catered towards road bars with brake hoods. I thought the half/half tape would look cool but I'm not that into it. I should have gone with Supacaz again. Much more grip.

Thanks.

They were plain hubs - no extra graphics, standard bearings, low flange and single fixed.

The order was placed June 21. Price was 209 Euro which worked out to be $244.51 USD based on that day's exchange rate.

I think Paypal charges a fee for converting the currency so that was part of the cost.

There are many currency calculators on the net. The dollar/euro exchange rate seems somewhat stable. There don't seem to be wild fluctuations like some other currencies.

I spent the summer in Europe and just returned to the good ol' U. S. and A. a few weeks ago. The exchange rate was pretty stable at $1.14 to $1.15 per Euro (or about 87 Euro cents to the dollar, if you prefer). It only fluctuated by a half penny or so, day to day.

Some of you may remember the blue Tempo with the gaudy gold wheels I posted earlier.

I liked riding fixed quite a bit, but honestly I was embarrassed to go ride that bike because I felt self conscious about how it looked. So it hung in garage and got no love.

During that same time, I was having lots of issues with getting the drivetrain on my 1976 Motobecane Grand Jubile to work well enough, so I made the decision to kill two birds with one stone and convert the old Motobecane into my fixed gear bike.

Much much happier with this setup than the blue Tempo. I still need to do some tweaking like installing a 5mm shorter spindle so that I can get the chainring on the outside of the crank, but it's quiet and the chain doesn't show any indications of wanting to jump off. I'd also like to put a 42 or 44 tooth chainring on, but my current 1/8" chain is just barely long enough for the 40x16 I have on it now.
