Stopped at the Park Ave. boat launch in Highland Park during a 55-miler up into Lake County.

Took pics at the giant anchor (which is "fouled" by Christmas lights) and a pic of the ivy-covered pumping station.





The real reason for stopping at the launch is its location, which is at the bottom of a ravine. I needed to test the new cable setup on my RD under load. The climb out is both long and steep. Still need a few tweaks, but the shifting is much improved.

Saturday, I participated in an event called Bike East, run by an advocate called The Brown Bike Girl. She brings cycling to folks in underserved neighborhoods, who might not realize they can ride bikes for health and frugality. I volunteered as a mechanic and helped lots of folks with their bikes. I rode with them for most of the way of the 20-mile ride, too. We had a police escort since many riders were novices. I even had someone come up to me who wasn't a participant. She just brought her bike for a free tuneup, and she was deeply grateful.

I had to ride 11 miles there and back, too, so I ended up spending many hours on the bike.

My wife and I took a nice ride out into the countryside on an empty dirt road, I was riding my 1994 Trek Antelope. Empty roads are not easy to find in this part of California. There was a break in the heat over the weekend so the temperature was very nice, I watch the weather reports closely and plan my rides accordingly, at this time of the year mornings are best.

I rode my 1985 Cannondale ST 400 on the Bicycle Ride Around Minnesota which started and ended in St. Joseph, MN. The ride was for 4 days and the distances were a little over 60 miles a day.

The bike handled great. It's a really comfortable long distance machine and I appreciated braze ons for 3 water bottle cages.

I did have a major mechanical as the hub shell on my rear wheel cracked. I managed to ride the bike around 10 miles to the lunch spot after the ride mechanic zip tied the spokes together so they wouldn't go flying off. I sagged it in from there to the next stop, Hutchinson, which had a bike shop that had a 126 mm rear wheel with formula hubs and a sun M13 rim. So I was able to finish the ride and now I have mismatched wheels. I'm pretty sure that having mismatched rules breaks one of the velominati rules but I'll deal with it, .

Neches River National Wildlife Refuge

This refuge opened up at the end of April, but it was flooded until the end of May. It's only about 10 minutes from me so I have been riding it once or twice a week when I am in town. The part they have open now is dead flat except for one unreasonable hill. I regularly see deer, wild hogs, all types of shore birds and a variety of small woodland creatures (squirrels, frogs, turtles, raccoons, possums) I even saw an alligator. The trail is mostly aging two track with hard pack and a mixed bag of other surfaces. It's very soft when wet though. There are a couple miles of gravel if you add it together and a few stream fordings and the occasional fallen log to hop over to make it interesting. Currently the longest loop is about 6.5 miles (see Strava screen shot below) but could be increased to about twelve when the get time to maintain a few more trails. They call the trails hiking trals but the refuge manager is going to add bicycles when he gets permanent signs made. I have been probably 15 times and have not seen another soul except who I brought with me. It is truly a wilderness area.

Great day for a ride around the neighborhood on my mid 80s Centurion elite rs. I rode by some of the houses more than once, but those houses were on roads with very little traffic. I noticed on curves the front tire felt a little soft, I need to take care of that. Time for a new floor pump.

We are having the most mild summer we have ever had (knocks on wood).

It was about 70 degrees today with a gentle, cool breeze coming in off the Pacific Ocean (again). The sun was shining and the sky was a beautiful, clear blue (again).

The bike path along the beach was relatively crowded as people were out after work getting some exercise. The street traffic was pretty minimal, which surprised me.

All in all, a good ride.

Maybe someday I will take some photos for posting. I have passed my entire life without them but maybe someday.

Evanston to Lake Bluff on the Frejus this morning, just a smidge under 60 miles and 1200 feet of climbing. (A more normal ride for me might be 45 miles with 300-400 feet of climbing.) Here in Chicagoland, you need to work to add any inclines. It would be hard to overstate what a lovely day it's been.

35 miles on the '78 PR10, from east Ventura out to Santa Paula, up and back thru two canyons on the way. Still tweaking on the Simplex RD, finally making progress. The 28t big rear gear and the jockey wheel were rubbing on the chain. Seems better now. Great ride except the nasty headwind coming back.
