Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Scott Foil Possible Counterfeit

So my husband bought a Scott Foil 2019 carbon frameset off ebay for £1,200 brand new. It arrived and some warning bells are going off, The edges are quite rough, the serial number has a drill through it so you can't actually read it and the seller says it was a warranty replacement from Scott and he doesn't have the original receipt.
Does this sound fake to you?

Replacement frame could be plausible but one would think that Scott would still be able to track serial #s for liability reasons in case of recall.

I'd say a call or email to Scott would be in order.

If the seller says it was a warranty replacement and it was drilled, it could be that it was the frame replaced, not the replacement. Manufacturers often require shops to cut up the old frame when they replace it under warranty to prevent the old frame from being sold or reused. Could be that hole was what the shop did, which didn't actually prevent the bike from being ridden.

Regardless, I'd send it back.
