When you can remember going skating growing up and being fitted to a metal skate that had to be tightened up with a key, and after about 2 months of skating, you had to go to the shoe repair store and have the sole repaired because it was coming loose.

My wife asked me a question the other day that I did in fact answer. A few minutes later she says, what did I just ask you? I had to tell her I didn't remember either.

You know you're getting old when you leave you glasses in the bedroom so you look younger in the bathroom mirror. Blurry cuts ten years off me.

And don't forget the discomfort when they came off unexpectedly. I hated that. One of those skates ended up on my first skateboard. Now those were skateboards.

I made a joking reference to Hans and Franz to a colleague the other day, and she had no idea what I was talking about.
How long ago WAS this?

Actually, not all that long ago. Many of us are too old to remember, and were SNL fans early on, but quit when most of the original cast and writers left (or died), and the show's quality declined beyond what we were conditioned to accept.

In my case, I'm aware of the characters, but if you mentioned them as Hans and Franz without context, I wouldn't have made the connection either.

Yeah, it's not like I made a CONEHEADS reference.

At least the Coneheads was in the 'Classic' SNL era. Dan Aykroyd/Jane Curtain/Laraine Newman SNL sketch that first aired Jan 1977. My Ohio State dorm intramural team shortly afterwards adopted the name since we 'consumed mass quantities'. We even had t-shirts printed up with cone-shaped 'Coneheads' lettering. I still have mine somewhere - couldn't dare part with it for sentimental reasons!!!

You're also old when you remember taking one of those skates and nailing it to a piece of 2x4 which in turn had a milk crate (yes a wooden one) nailed to the front of the 2x4 and made a scooter out of it. Poor kids soap box derby

Or, simpler yet, making a crude skateboard with those skates. 'Grab your board and go sidewalk surfin' with me....bust your buns.....bust your buns, now' (Jan and Dean, of course)

When you discover the creaks you are hearing in your bike are not your cranks, BB, saddle or seat-post, but you!

You played with clackers, lawn darts, and M-80s when you were a kid (and somehow survived).

You blew stuff up at school with home cooked formulas and no one called the police, let alone homeland security.

I know that State Farm got a lot of... er... backblast, when they ran that Hans & Frans "Discount Doublecheck" commercial that made their pecs dance for joy, last year!

... and I have a Daisy stored in my closet, from my misspent youth...
