If, for example, you're in your open garage tinkering around w/your bike or whatever, and a neighbor walks up and says "hey, I got a kids' school fundraiser group ride coming up this wknd, can I borrow your bike?", WWYD? It could be a relative, friend, different circumstance, etc.

If no, why not, and what reason do you give the person asking? Just wondering, thanks.

Lol, I used to frequently buy/sell smartphones, possessing 3 or 4 flagship devices at once. My BIL asked, thru my wife, if he could "borrow" a phone, i.e. use indefinitely. He was a bit dismayed when my wife handed him, from me, this cheap-a$$ flip phone.

I have a 1990s steel road bike that I keep around as a Plan B/trainer/guest bike. It isn't light or flashy, but it is comfortable and in good working order. I would consider loaning it out to another rider whom I knew and trusted. For someone to borrow my primary road bike, I would have to know and trust them very well and it would require extraordinary circumstances, like they had their bike stolen the day before the event. Very few people have ridden my road bike, even for a test ride.

I have an old and somewhat beat-up Giant Sedona MTB that pretty much just gets used on my trainer (I replaced the knobby tires with slicks) that I will sometimes lend out to my neighbor across the street. He likes to go riding with his brother when he's in town (the brother always has his hybrid with him) but doesn't yet have a bike of his own, so he'll come see me. He always returns it in the shape he got it in (except for the seat being higher), so as long as he doesn't wreck it in some way, shape or form, I don't have a problem continuing to lend it to him.

It depends on the person but the list I would loan my bike to is very short. I was out with a group riding and someone wanted to swap off to give my bike a try I wouldn't hesitate, even to someone I had just met. I'd be far more comfortable with someone who owns nicer bikes like would likely be the case on a group ride. I have a friend who I remodeled a house I inherited and live there rent free for a couple years when he first got married and was saving for a down payment but no way I'd lend him my bike, he is just hard on stuff. Same goes with my motorcycles and ATV's.

When I finish upgrading/modifying my new purchase and get it how I like it, I might consider loaning my old modified Huffy mountain bike. But while it's my primary bike, no way. Unless it's a very close friend or relative and it's only for an hour or so.

One of my bikes - a cross bike that I use mainly for commuting w/ 32mm street tires - is on long term loan to a friend who needs a bike for a couple of months. The bike is sturdy and in good condition, I don't need it day to day (I can commute on any of my bikes when it comes down to it) and although he's not an obligate amateur mechanic like me, knows how to keep a bike lubed and aired up. He's a very old friend and owns two really nice bikes and keeps them immaculate, so I trust him.

When we go for a fast ride together, I let him borrow one of my lighter bikes for the day. He does the same thing when I visit him.

I have a few bikes. Most of witch I'd never lend. But I usually have a bike or two I could loan to someone I knew to be trustworthy. Or gift to someone I care about.

Not going to happen. I don't loan anything out any more. I was taught to treat other people's stuff with more care than my own. I guess nobody else was taught that. Last thing I loaned out came back broken and scratched all up. And before that did not go well either. Sure it's just a bike but it's still $3000 to replace the cheap one.

My main bike I would lend to a good friend or to someone who I know is competent (say, a teammate.) My backup I would probably lend to anyone.

I have a single-speed cheapie beach cruiser I 'lend' out to friends who want to go down to the beach with me (I live about 3 miles from it). Other than that, no, I won't 'lend' someone a road bike. FWIW: If its someone wanting to use it for a quickly-approaching fundraiser they probably knew about it quite a while in advance, so I'd mention there best option is probably to rent a road bike from a LBS that can properly tune it up and size it to their body. If they don't want to do that, then just donate the $$$ they think they would have raised to the organization benefited by the fundraiser, and maybe volunteer to work a checkpoint/aid station or something similar.

It really depends on who, and which bike.

I'd be open to lending a bike to a good friend, or even a casual friend depending on the circumstances. For example, he might be someone I know can ride, but his bike suddenly had an issue and won't be available.

Also, I have a few bikes and they aren't all equally lendable. So I'm far more open to lending my B bike than I am my A bike. I've lent the commuter and folding bikes a number of times.
