Look who's riding a bike! (Old time movie stars)
Hat tip to Elliot and his excellent blogzine Austin on Two Wheels for posting a review of the photo blog Rides A Bike.
We sometimes discuss how helpful it would be if the media portrayed bike riding in a more favorable way. Well, here it is...or was.

This is a Tumblr photo blog of movie stars from the golden age of cinema on bikes. From Clark Gable and James Dean to Marilyn Monroe and a Lt. Uhura, go-go boot clad Nichelle Nichols, these photos show riding a bike can be as glamorous and sexy as a car.

Movie stars?
I went to see Made in Dagenham, a film about the first women's equal pay strike in 1968 England. Surprised to see all the factory workers going to and from their jobs on 3-speeds. Lot of bikes and, besides that, a great movie.

Yeah, stuff like Deanna Durbin riding a bike backwards, Clark Gable and Ginger Rogers riding no-hands, some photos are stills from movie roles, others look like candid shots. They seem to be having lots of fun. Quite unlike the comical portrayal of bike riding we've seen most recently in "The 40 Year Old Virgin".

I liked that picture of Shirley Temple learning to ride a bike in Palm Springs. A friend of mine owned the house she lived in near Palm Springs.

I would like to know more about the "Sound of Music" bikes, I'm assuming the huge levers under the handlebars are brakes?

Bikes: 2010 Torker T-300, with drop bars. A vintage lugged Mercier 12 speed. A repainted, rebuilt 1986 Raleigh Pursuit road bike. 1988 Panasonic DX3000 is my fave new ride

I've seen a photo of Jessica Biel riding what looked like a mountain bike. She's definitely into fitness to keep her body that tight.
