I hope the news isn’t true - Della Santa

Reports on Facebook that Roland passed away last night. I hope it’s not true.

Sad, for the present, but a celebration of his contributions is in order, as well, with gratitude.

He will be remembered well by many, and that is hard to say about many of us.
He came to our table at a bar in Austin during NAHBS and was a really nice guy, with a good sense of humor.
@bigbossman and others will miss him, as they had a lot of interaction with him.

The industry was better for him. Peace and condolences to those he left behind.

yep, nice guy. I had about a 15 minute conversation with him at NAHBS Sacramento in 2012 an in that time determined he was a pretty nice, knowledgable guy. Sorry to hear he's gone. See ya in bike heaven Roland!

Very sad news, now I wish I had bid on his bike at auction, even though it did not fit, an artist/craftsman and good man has passed into the light.

His hand will not build again.

Very sad news.

A true gentleman and he could really build a nice riding frameset.

I'm glad I have one.

FWIW Over the last few years I have been bugging him to build a canti version of the Corsa with fender eyelets. I'll never forget the pained look on his face at NAHBS when I brought the subject up with him. There are a few of these examples out there, so I'll have to keep my eyes out for one and pay the price.

RIP Roland. You will be missed.

The DS frames I have built and ridden were clean, no nonsense, and great riders. A craftsman is always missed.

You did a great job on the one you built for my son, that's for sure.

I liked it so much, I ended up putting some $$$$ towards his new bike and I bought it.

All the racing bike I'll ever need and then some.

In a sad, ironic twist of fate, my friend's Della Santa, custom made for him in 1994 and his regular ride ever since then, has developed a fatal crack in the downtube... result of a dent that happened in a crash quite a few years ago... it finally just fatigued. He's hoping to find a frame builder to repair it who will do it justice and can get it resprayed with a worthy paint job for a price that won't make him consider retiring it.

DS Repair

Roland’s apprentice, Jake, would likely be the best person to help with this. He works with Jim Allen, Roland’s painter, and can probably take care of you. Send me a PM for contact info.

Wow, my buddy's frame crack is worse than I was thinking:

He had put that primer over the dent years ago so he could keep an eye on it.
