Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I've got a different Silca tool roll - it's the Premio saddle roll with a Boa fastener -

It comes off easily when I need it and stays put when I don't, so I guess it's done a good job so far.

For short rides that start from home I just use a ziplock bag. However, longer rides especially when I need to drive to the starting point, my car keys love to chew through the bag and also they are a hassle to work with when I want to pull out my phone to check something, or take photos. In those instances I use the Rapha rainproof essentials case.

It holds a small cable and lock for times I might need to leave my bike out of sight for a few minutes.

Heres a low priced, neoprene option ($8.99 with Prime ship) for people who might like an experiment:

Seems like it may make sense to look at compact camera cases or accessory pouches, eg.

My saddle bag's zipper broke this morning, so I took its contents (tube, CO2, inflator head, a lever, and a multitool) and bundled them up with a rubber band/stuck it in my jersey pocket. Seemed to work just fine, why are these little bags preferable? Don't think the sweat is going to do too much damage to the tube...

For me it's just a factor of convenience. People will just stuff their jersey pockets with what they need and it works as well as putting everything in a wallet/baggie. I'd probably forget something without having everything in a tidy little package. I prefer my contents to lay flat in my pocket; bundled together in a rubber band would, I feel, create a cylindrical object which I would find uncomfortable.

The tools go in a saddle bag. Everything else in a small one of these/middle jersey pocket. Plenty of colors available including high viz black. Ziplocs have failed me before.

That's a good call. I'm going to check out the selections at Fry's Electronics today, when I pick up my new monitor.

APP (All-Purpose Pouch) ? Makeshifter Canvas Works (out of stock right now because she moved to a new shop but supposed to be gearing production up soon).

https://banjobrothers.com/collection...g-phone-wallet -- too small for tubes.

https://roadrunnerbags.us/collection...ol-saddle-roll -- can be stuffed in the jersey or used as a saddlebag

Couple options from North Street -- https://northstbags.com/collections/...anizer-pouches or https://northstbags.com/collections/tool-rolls

So the tools, inflator and other gear doesn't doesn't snag your stylish high-vis or all black jersey.

In all seriousness, a little bag can protect and expensive jersey and provides stability for the load similar to what you did with the rubber band, and it does it with style!

Lezyne road caddy, small enough to fit in a pocket or can be strapped to the saddle

Re: Neoprene Camera Bags as an option...

I'd watch selecting a camera case.
The idea seemed like it might provide a lot of options...but a quick search showed many of them look like semi-"hard" clam shells...I think compared to the softer bags(Sticky Pod, or the BUBM linked above) they might feel like a lump against your back...many of them have a ≥>>Belt Loop!! Think about it.

OK.
A couple of observations, and a confession:

1) lots of good input, I'm enjoying the "groupthink/crowdsource" aspect of the thread. Thanks!
2) some people seem to take the topic a bit too seriously.
3)the thread might be a resource for ppl deciding to go this route...lotsa ideas, choices and price points.

I've used a large Sticky Pod for close to two years.
I've also bought the small version, and I'm hoping to cut down the cargo and see if anything vital goes missing.
Very pleased overall.
A few drawbacks.
Neoprene is water resistant, not waterproof...the SP has performed well in the little rain to which I've subjected my bike/rides.
The neoprene has several other good points...stretches to accommodate your tools/tube/levers, etc...has a 'skin to skin' cushioning quality that materials, other than leather, are unlikely to provide.
I don't shove my relatively cheap smart phone in there..gets it's own jersey pocket. It could fit, but I consider it a "tool bag".

Interesting that both Lezyne's popular older and newer Caddy Sacks haven't made the thread.

Keep in mind that if you go the back pocket bag route, you want to get one that is intended for cycling. I saw several listed that just happen to be a small bag. You want something that will not get soaked with sweat, something that has a liner that will keep the water from getting in.

Bought this mini camera case last night. My Samsung Galaxy barely fits. But once in, there is plenty of room for little extras, like money and keys. But with the phone, it would not be big enough for tube and tools also.

^^^ This is why I don't do a wallet for the phone. I want the phone to be accessible, so I opt for a waterproof case-- tons of them on Amazon for ~$20, I get about 6-7 months out of each before the screen protector is scratched all to hell and the buttons are starting to wear through. Then I just buy another one.

I've been using the newer Caddy Sack for a couple years on my road bike and the corners are actually a bit stiff and can start to wear holes in the jersey pocket after a bit. I don't road bike much so I haven't been motivated to try something else but just an FYI.

That sale might have been what got me posting this thread.

Super nice stuff, marketing maybe a little pretentious./sarc

While I wouldnt buy the "Ralpha" jersey, it does make me laugh.
