This is the machine that this post is about. I've never bought a tyre over 700 x 28c (MTB excepted) so I'm all at sea looking for 650 x 42, vintage looking tyres. Let me know what's good looking and works, bearing in mind the budget on this one is somewhat limited. European availability or cheap postage from around the world would help. Thank you chaps & chapettes.

...for availability in larger sizes and price/quality, it's hard to beat Panaracer tyres. But if you need a 650b, I think the widest they go is 38 (which is wider than average IME). If you really want wide tyres, you're probably better off going to a different rim diameter, if that's possible. Shop around, they often go on sale.

Rene Herse, Grand Bois, and Soma should all have European distributors and all make a high quality 650bx42 skinwall tire.

OP states the rims are 650b.

I like the Panaracer/Pacenti Pari-Moto. It doesn't have much flat-protection, but they roll as well as the Compass "René Herse" tires, which are not cheap. Pari-Motos can often be found for ~$30-40 a piece in America on Ebay. I'm not sure how much shipping to France would add on.

I have Pari-Motos 650x42 on my Jack Taylor tandem and plan to put them on my Herse and my Trek as well.

*edit* @scarlson you must type faster than I do *edit*

And don't forget about the Panaracer Pari-Moto! Available in 27.5 x 1.75" (650b x 42) or 27.5 x 1.5" (650b x 38). I've listed the inch sizes since that seems to be how they are typically marketed.

They're a nice tire if you want supple on a budget. A bit thin though, some people have flat issues with them.

Pretty bike! I love the chainguard

All I read was that the OP stated the rims were 650.

There are 3 different 650 sizes:
650A, 650B, 650C.

There apparently was at one time wider versions of the 650c, including 26x1 1/2 and 26x1 3/4.

Thanks for all the recommendations, Pretty much all of them I've searched for are in the US of A. Might come down to lowest postage.

Sounds like you need to go to the "whatever is cheapest tire that fits is best tire" plan that I often go to.

Hmmm... I accidentally bought some mighty big tires.

27.5 x 2.80. Whew, HUGE. I don't even see a brand on them.

But, it looks like it is a fairly common tire size, although most of them have a fair amount of tread.

There is a Schwalbe Big Ben Plus 27.5 x 2 tire.

This one is even in Germany.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Schwalbe-Bi...s/233262084323

I'm seeing some White Wall tire paint. That might fun.

https://www.amazon.com/Anvil-White-W.../dp/B0798VVCD3

You could build a lathe out of a bicycle wheel easily enough, but getting an even coat using a brush on your lathe might be tough. Perhaps mask along one of the tire forming lines, then do whitewall from the mask line down to the bead.

Will this be an everyday rider?

A train station bike?

If I know the intended use, I'll suggest something.

I like the bike btw. It will be charming when its all spiffed up.

Is this a common French size?

What about simply riding into a French Bike Shop?

I know this isn't French, but can you find a place like this in France?

If he doesn't have it, then nobody will.

It used to be a common size in France. I'm sure most French bike shops stock cheap 650b tires for fixing up old city and touring bikes. But they aren't much fun to ride at that price point. I would look to a Panaracer product today.

Panaracer now makes a Pasela in 650x42B, too. Around $25.

Hah, I would likely recommend the same for that bike.

Decent tire at an el-cheapo price.

Not every bike needs RH/Compass tires.

Frustrating, but they'll restock.

Even if you have to pay a bit more, the tires will likely suit your needs for some time to come.
