Took apart, cleaned and overhauled my Sturmey Archer XL-RD5(w) hub tonight. Spins really well again.

Yes sir!

This is going to look like a brand new Elsinore by spring.

But this is no garage queen. It'll be covered in grime every weekend I can get away this summer. The same roads I ride my gravel bikes on will do nicely for the Honda.

And trying to recreate a faux facsimile (from a distance) on "Victoria" Van Tuyl...

Not exactly perfect "faux shoa"...

Repainted decaling...that worked better.

If it won't come off, paint it.

Not sure how to go about the plaid but will work it.

Pre-shipment. Trying to resurrect the Miche-like headset for use. Lots of moving parts that I was not aware of...

Motobecane Le Champ MOD 2.0

No flames please, I was starting with only the frameset so no other original parts were taken off.
Misc parts including new, used, stuff I had around. Terry Liberator saddle, Shimano triple I drilliumed (or is it driliumized), Microshift brifters, 9 speed Ultegra cassette, DT Swiss rims/hubs. 20 lb 8 oz per my Park scale. Not done, and roads are salted so won't be able t ride until spring

Not bad 3Roch ! You are pushing some serious light weight for a steel framed bike with a triple and brifters. My friend's Vitus 979 weighs about that much.

Which DT wheels are they, and how much do they weigh?

Most excellent!

Drooled over these when new and many others at the time as well as Paramounts at the Schwinn store across the street.

As I've stated before, these spelled the demise of the great ones that came before for everyday motocross, Husky, Maico, Bultaco, CZ, Penton, Ajs and many others, it was brutal and surgical, all at the same time.

Yeah, the Elsinore was pretty easy to buy locally bitd. Not as many shops were carrying the brands you mentioned.

However, it took me 8-10 years to find one that was straight and in my price range.

This won't get out of control like my bicycle sweet tooth, but I just got a line on a 1972 Montesa 247 trials bike.

Needs an engine!

Oh well, back to the dirt bike forums.

And therein lies the rub, Honda and Japans marketing steamrolled what had really been a niche market/sport up until then, unfortunately for the stalwarts a superior product was the death knell, they didn't stand a chance.

Good luck with the Montessa, another great brand that Japan had no trouble disseminating in to their takeover which wasn't difficult, all the hard/groundwork having been laid by those that came before.

Scarlson: The rims are DT swiss RR411, 32 in back 28 in front. DB 2-1.8-2. DT 350 hub in back, Hope hub in front. Al nipples in front. I don't remember what the bare wheels weighed but I just ran down and weighed the ft wheel with Michelin 23 mm Power Race tire with tube, no skewer, and it was 2 lb,3 oz.. By the way the 20 8 oz was without pedals, with pedals it's 21, 3oz
Merziac...........
Re the Elsinore discussion. In my misspent younger days I raced motocross with a 250 CZ, then tried a 125 Elsinore when they first came out. That was the end of the CZ

I’ve been working on moving. That means saying goodbye to the cool retro floor in my former basement workspace. I got my new space together last night. I believe the new space will work better even though it may not look as fun. I was able to hang all of the bikes in this space, that is a big improvement. I was also able to hang a few of my grandpas tools (the two craftsman drills and hammers)

Yep, it was a short trip, straight to H**L.

I'm betting the CZ did a good job until then.

Very, very nice.
That spot looks very comfortable, well organized and looks like you can get a lot done there.

I'm assuming you had the CR125? That's what I wanted, but my step-dad thought I'd kill myself on it (I got it for my 12th b'day) and got me the MT125 instead. It still said Elsinore, but had lights, and it was a 4-stroke rather than 2-stroke, so not quite as mean, lol. 🙄😉

Back on topic, I rebuilt my threadless headset, on the C'dale Killer V 500 today. I've only had this bike since early November, and didn't realize it was so bad, till yesterday. Mostly the top cap got stressed from too much tightening, because it really needed one more washer, to fit right. Plus the star washer wasn't very far into the steer tube. Done deal now, and I confirmed that the steer tube is steel, not one of the aluminum ones, that got recalled. 😲😉

Man, you MX guys are taking me back....

MT-125 was a two-stroke. Maybe you're thinking of the SL or XL 125s.

BITD I had a Bultaco Pursang, but I remember when the CR-125 came out and started winning everything in sight.

The MT might have been detuned a bit and also had to be heavier with lights, mirrors and street pipe, even on a KZ 1000, that stuff dropped a 10th of a second in the 1/8 mile ET when I took it off. Overall I think that had a lot to do with it, make it light, give it more power, copy the winning attributes of what was winning all along and next thing you know the old guard just won't get it done anymore, they still had more style and brute force in many cases but the game had changed too much.

Geez, bikes with motors.

Had a Bultaco Metralla with an Astro motor. Mrs. Doc got upset one night when she came home earlier than expected and found the crankcases in the oven and the bearings in the freezer.

But that's a story for another time...

You're right, 2-stroke, I just did a search. I'm kind of an idiot about engines, lol, and the memory's not what it used to be. 🙄🤔😉

I also had a CL350 for a short while, another scrambler. It was one of my uncles' bikes, and when he upgraded, my step-dad got it cheap.
I was riding that and a CB750 a few times, when I was still 15. I had long legs, so got away with a lot of dumb stuff. 😁

Picked this up about a month ago for only $40 but was missing brake calipers and didn't have any of the original DX components. I had a pretty complete DX set from another bike I parted out and got it all back together this week. Added a pair of riser bars last night (not shown), anxious to get it out sometime this week this.

Over the extended Thanksgiving weekend, I was able to get my sudden rolling bucket of woes Z28 Camaro (get one thing fixed, and down go the dominoes!) down three hours to see family as I had been denied (by said car issues) at the beginning of November. It was a great time, though I had business to attend to. Thwarted by any combination of rain, lack of light, weekend time (aka day light), a steep and exposed apartment complex driveway, and not being able to work on things curb side, it would be the shed/shop at my parents' place, in 35° weather (ok, with closed doors and a propane heater) where the car would be worked on. Five and a half years ago, I changed plugs in this car. NGK iridium plugs meant to go 100k miles. 55,000 miles in, I pull one and see it gapped at 0.064"--spec is 0.050" and I know I'm stressing the ignition system. Long pre-story short, all eight plugs are changed over the course of two sessions over two days, roughly three hours a piece. To say that changing plugs on an LT1 Camaro with aftermarket headers is difficult is an understatement. Scraped knuckles, bruised and cut backs-of-hands, a big muscle cramp while under the car, and the worst angles and leverages imaginable (both above and below the engine) made for yet another trying effort. And all for semi-naught as an oil leak repair that I paid good money for (very recently) failed, causing hot oil to decently leak out of the engine and onto the block and transmission bellhousing. Which means smoke/steam. Not good to see, and not good to smell. I will be making an appointment to bring it in again for what will likely be warranty work, and hopefully a redone job will be successful.

Below are the plugs in pretty accurate order (the dark ones are completely correct though), with the top of the photo representing the front of the engine. All gaps are huge and from what I can surmise, the same as they were when I bought them. This means that Previous ROS likely didn't gap the plugs, even if the car ran flawlessly afterwards. Dark plug on the passenger side had dirt/oil(?) all over its threads for no reason (nothing leaking from above on the heads) and didn't smell at all like anything. Dark plug on the driver's side had actually backed out a bit and was loose in its threading--the source of one of my exhaust ticks! I have a very quiet engine bay for the first time in years.
