Slime tubes for my 29er?

Tubeless is the long term plan, but until then, do Slime tubes get the job done? Running 29 x 2.25 and thinking Slime tubes might provide some added security. Experiences to share?

Only awful experiences from the co-op. I'd just go with a spare tube. And tire liners. You still won't get by with lower pressures like tubeless. I can run decent single track with my pressures at 32psi and generally avoid pinch flats. Stupid wooden bridge crossings are where I usually smack the back and get a flat.

Slime sucks, but sealant in the tubes has worked for me. It requires tubes with removable valve cores. Remove the core, pour in a few ounces of Orange Seal, and boom - poor man's tubeless. I ran this setup on Dirty Kanza in 2016 with no flats, before I finally upgraded to actual tubeless.

cool. With added sealant, do you notice any unevenness in your roll?

I had Slime tubes in my daughter's 27.5s before her wheel upgrade to tubeless. The Slime never dried like when you get a puncture with Stans, Orange Seal etc. It kept oozing green out of each thorn hole and slowed the leaks but never sealed solid. I guess it's better that nothing but true tubeless is the way to go.

Slime is the worst thing on earth. LBS guys just offer it to jack up the price of fixing a flat. Good tire pressure, a patch kit, or go tubeless.

I used to ride with tubes before but here in Las Vegas, there's a lot of thorns that will give you leaks here and there. So now I run tubeless. When running tubes (now only with my road bikes), I put stans in it (valve core must be removable) and it has worked for me so far. Hopefully I did not jinx myself buy posting this LOL.

Well some don't like the slime, but for Schrader valve tubes I have done it. I haven't tried to slime a 29er presta tube, nor have I used a slime tube on my 29er. I live in the land of goatheads and have seen tires covered in them. I have done a few of the local kids bikes and my wife's 26 er is done with slime tubes too. It works against goathead punctures. Most have held for over a year. I pull the core of the schrader valve put a few ounces into the tire. It just sucks getting flats every ride and I am not paying for a conversion kt for local kids, when they can be happy out riding for free - I will give the slime out free. I have used Slime tubes with good results too. It won't help with pinch flats I don't think, but it sure helps with goatheads. I have seen tires covered in goatheads - literally hundreds if the single track in my area hasn't been ridden for a while. Goatheads are really a bane for me!

I was having a string of bad luck with normal tubes from China, the land of many (bad tubes that is) so I spent a few more bucks and upgraded to Slime tubes with Presta valves on my 27.5 MTB and haven't had a single problem since. I've gotten so complacent with them I forget most mornings to even check tire pressures, short of squeezing the brake and pushing down on the frame (first front and then rear). I like them.
