Swaging??

Dropped my frame off yesterday at a frame builder and he talked about swaging. I have never heard of it and wondering if anyone knows of a video showing it for bike tubing? I only seem to see other industrial applications.

I thought swaging was something like what Bilenky does with that big machine they have. They can take straight tubes and turn them into tapered chainstays or fork blades. Or, at least that's my understanding.

It turns the tube between dies that are set at an angle (or mandrels) and 'squishes' it into smaller diameter tube with thicker walls.

I don't know what a framebuilder would be swaging on a complete frame though.

Swaging is usually referring to tapering down the tube's diameter with the resulting wall getting thicker. Seat, chain stays and blades come to mine. I believe there have been some swaging of main frame tubes, One way of making a double butted tube is to butt externally one end, pull out the mandrel and then reduce the OD at that end. Andy

Right, and for the life of me, I can't imagine how this would be applied to a completed frame as the OP references.

Fame tube descriptions have been filtered through many steps, marketing departments being a big one. When end users use these terms, however incorrectly, the marketers have done their job well. Andy

dimpling for tire clearance? Or there may be more surgery on this frame than that. I don't remember what the OP was having done to his bike.

Ok, well that makes sense as chainstays, seatstays and fork blades are all swaged down from straight tubing. As discussed above, swaging is the process of making the tubing tapered like those just mentioned. As also mentioned, Bilenky has a machine that allows them to custom swage tubes. I think they'll do it for other builders as well.
