Addiction LXXIII

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Ok, time to get serious, WARNING! cycling content.

One week in with my Kickr Snap and I really love/hate this thing.
I love the real road and climbing feel. Workout sessions without constant shifting to hit power targets.
I hate it, because it shows me exactly how pathetic a cyclist I am.
My new FTP is 90% of what it was.

I'm right there with you except 1) I never knew what my FTP is/was and 2) at this point I KNOW I'm pathetic, so no disappointment on that end.

Speaking of FTP, Strava is giving me an estimated FTP, but I'm not sure if it's basing it off of the convoluted data from my old rides without a power meter or if it's only basing it off of my Zwift rides. I could do an FTP test, but I thought I would at least do 2-3 weeks of just riding again until I feel decent.

But this has been pretty great for me. Are you doing some sort of Wahoo training app thing or are you also doing the Zwifting? I have been pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoy Zwift. One of those situations where I am so happy to be wrong about my initial impressions. I did the 13 mile London ride last night not realizing that it had a good sized climb on the 2nd to last quarter or the ride. I was proud of myself for grinding it out without stopping. That's why the Zwift setup is so great for me. If I had some stopwatch and paper in front of me, I would have just given up, but to see the map and know you are inching towards the end, it's enough to keep me on it and push myself.

I'm using Rouvy, I like the real road videos, and the augmented reality is Zwift like, but no drafting, you have to work for it. There are structured guided and unguided workouts, and racing, but they claim to be close to augmenting all routes and races.
I was riding a Kenitic Rock N Roll before, which was good, but the Snap is 100% better, there's no hiding on this thing!

I would not trust FTP from Strava. I believe the estimated Zwift FTP should be pretty reliable. That’s my impression at least.

Have you done any group rides yet?

No group rides. I'm genuinely just moving my legs again for the first time in a long time. Except for a really brief spurt in early summer last year, I barely touched the bike at all in 2018. I think my mileage for the year was probably less than 500 miles. Right now the plan is to just play with the available Zwift routes and try to get a weekend ride in when the weather is good on Saturday mornings. Then I might look at one of the FTP builder workout programs to kick into and maybe I can actually be a decent rider by late spring?

Finally completed the doorbell project. The hard part was setting up an AC doorbell, with all the wiring and all. Attaching the new video-motion detector doorbell to the system was relatively easy. It works pretty cool so far, I just have to dial back the motion sensor a little because now it's picking up passing trucks on the street. But overall I'm happy with the new gadget.

I'd think Strava is giving you an FTP estimate from your Zwift rides, since it's feeding real power data. I don't think Strava tries to estimate an FTP from its own power estimates for your outdoor rides without a PM. Like Doug said, if you haven't actually tried to go as hard as you can for 20 minutes yet, then I'd disregard whatever it's telling you.

Yeah, don't trust Strava FTP unless you ride always with a power meter. Zwift does a good job at estimating FTP, but as Dan says, you need to put in a good 20 min effort. I use the wattopia epic climb as a gauge as its a good 20+ min effort and I like the resistance the climb provides over a flat course 20 min effort.

Fun Zwift Fact- I didn't realize until recently that the "Alpe du Zwift" section of Watopia is actually a pretty exact recreation of Alpe d'Huez. Neat.

I did not perform a wiring project this week. The horn on the Jeep is sounding at random times. Possible short. It's too cold to mess with it today, so I just unplugged it.
