Someone in SoCal rode 26,000 miles last year. That's 71 miles a day, year round. Even world tour pros don't ride that much. Insanity. If each day was 40 hours long, I had no family or friends, no need to work, and had unlimited resources to spend on whatever bike toys I wanted... I still wouldn't ride even half that much. It gives me a saddle sore just thinking about it.

Yeah, the career pathways are a lot more diverse in that field.
My wife was a grad student at MIT during late 70s and early 80s and I remember her writing early drafts of her thesis in her apartment on a VT100 with a 1200 baud modem. It was pretty exciting when she bought a Mac in about 1984, just before finishing up. When I was in grad school, we had some kind of desktop computer in the lab, but it only spoke machine language and controlled rat experiments. I left it the hell alone and used a typewriter.

Vain, But Lacking Talent
Do we have any Addictionites near Manhattan? It's looking increasingly likely that my work trip is going to cover a weekend (not this weekend, but next) and I was curious to know if there was a decent bike rental option somewhere between the hordes of tourist options right outside Central Park and some high end road bike rental. I don't want to be all flashy with my clippy shoes and curved handlebars, but it would be nice to rent a hybrid that isn't constantly thrashed by tourists. Then again, maybe that would be plenty sufficient. I probably wouldn't ride outside of Central Park.

My studies were in a primate lab using DEC machines, also in the mid to late 80s. This PDP8e was a sophisticated machine at the time, and to conduct my studies I had to know not just the program language, but the machine and assembly languages as well. Such fun. Today . . . I would be so lost . . . lol.

HA! We upgraded to a PDP11 during my tour, I had forgotten all about that. I remember my mentor was so giddy we almost had to hose him down. lol

I had an IBM Selectric at home, I don't remember how we acquired that pricey bad boy. Churned out lots of undergrad and grad papers for me, all you needed was a little correction tape.
