Pain in foot below ankle on outside of foot

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Pain in foot below ankle on outside of foot

I am experiencing pain on the outside of my foot below the ankle. It is not really tender to the touch but it hurts like hell when I put full weight on it. Can definitely feel it during pedaling. Its not excruciating pain during the pedal stroke, but something is up. Maybe a strain or stress fracture? Would a foam roller help? Anyone experiencing something like this. I have been running more lately...

I have also recently been experiencing pain below the knee on the outside where the tendon is. Which basically flared up because I have been walking a little differently due to the foot.

No health insurance so doctor is not really an option...
Thanks for advice

I am not a Doctor but I had foot problems for years from running. Sounds like Plantar Fasciitis or bones spurs. Advil works for me for pain and swelling. I have custom insoles in my shoes help with soreness. You can buy over the counter insoles for heel pains. Don't run on that foot for two weeks. Stretching and icing that area help. If you live in the U.S.A go to Walmart and find a night splint for your foot helps a lot.

Are you using clipless pedals? Are you using "float" cleats?

I am new (again) to cycling, but I am a podiatrist. Without seeing you in person it is difficult to tell what exactly the problem is, but based on what you wrote it does not seem like plantar fasciitis, but more like peroneal tendonitis. A good first step would be to cut down on the training that causes it to flare (like running). If you are training for a triathlon I would concentrate more on swimming and cycling if it is not to painful. Ice it several times a day and take an over the counter anti-inflammatory if you aren't allergic or have stomach ulcer type problems. If that doesn't help then you may need to see someone for an in-person exam and maybe an x-ray. What I wouldn't do is try to push through the pain as that strategy rarely works, and can cause relatively easy to treat conditions to progress to the point where recovery takes quite a while. If I had to guess, the pain may have more with your increased running than with your biking.

But you have to adjust the float. What are you using?

sounds exactly like what I had two seasons ago which was peroneal tendinitis. I ended up on anti inflammatories, PT twice a week for a few weeks. And no biking during that time. Lots of stretching and ice too.
