Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Shimano 105 5800 - When is it coming?

Anybody hear any rumors about when Shimano will release 5800 105? Any big Shimano events coming up? 105 5700 was released about this time in 2010. I feel like its been so long since an update of a midrange group (really Rival or 105) and I'm getting impatient.

6800 was just released back in July. You'll be waiting at least another 6 months for 5800, but probably 18.

That is an interesting question as the 105 (5700) pedals have been replaced with the new, 5700 C's.

What do you think 11spd 105 will be like? 6800 without the carbon levers, a cheaper crankset(no hollow chainrings), and a cheaper finish would be my guess.

Best combo would probably be 5800 everything except the crankset and the brakes.

What I really want to see a 5800 triple with Di2.

Pretty sure you nailed it. Which is fantastic for someone who's running Rotor cranks anyway.

I don't know why you would even want 5800. 6800 is superb at less than 8 bills.

The 6800 is so nice, I'm saving for it (currently have 5700). I've already went to 6800 brakes and the build difference is stark.

It will be a while, but the 6800 will be mine....OH YES! Mine all mine!!!

Maybe because some dont want to spend the extra 2 bills for a CX bike/commuter groupset.

What will 5800 do that 5700 doesn't? 1 extra gear is pointless for cx or commuter. My 5700 group shifts perfectly and is all my commuter will ever need. The hood shape is better on my 6800 bike though.

I'm sure people said the same thing about 5600 when it came out.

11-speed is officially coming fast. Tried to source an 8-speed brifter set recently? I mean, I haven't, but I understand it isn't easy. If your "nice" bikes are 11-speed 6800 or 9000, there are serious benefits to your commuter/ beater bikes also being 11-speed for parts and wheel compatibility, in a pinch.

Yeah, but 5600 didn't require a rear hub change.

For people who are budget minded, keeping a 10 speed bike will make sense for the next few years. I have a stack of 10 speed Dura Ace cassettes I use on my 5700 bike I got for $25 apiece.

Not everyone has multiple wheelsets. Purchasing 5800 may not be an upgrade for them, it could be part of their complete bike purchase.

No one is forcing you to go 11spd, but in the not to distant future all quality road/CX bikes will be 11spd.

Today or tomorrow I'll be ordering a 6800 groupset, and the parts to rebuild my rear wheels. I could save money, and get 6700, but a groupset lasts me about 90k miles(6-7 years). Quality 10spd parts will be hard to find long before then.

lol, no, they won't be hard to find. I can get parts all day long for my DA 7700 9 speed bike that I bought fourteen years ago.

Once 5800 is released and it costs the same as 5700 it will be kind of a no brainer to go 11sp if you're in the market for a new groupset. The main benefit of the new Shimano 11sp is the improvement in shift quality. You can get some of that benefit by installing 6800/9000 cables on your 5700/6700/7900 group.

It's ok if you like riding outdated bikes, no one is forcing you to change.

If I kept the same shifters for 14 years(about 200,000 miles), I doubt they would work very well. I got about 95,000 miles out of my 7800 shifters, but now they are getting pretty sloppy.

Of course that is beside the point. You said in 8 years you wouldn't be able to FIND replacement parts, which is an ignorant thing to say.

My statement is accurate.

It's pretty hard to find NOS 7800 shifters these days. I'm sure it's even harder to find NOS 7700 shifters.

A thirty second internet search is "hard"? About 100 sets of new Shimano 9 speed brifters on ebay. Lots of excellent condition 7700.

Fact: 10 speed components are going to be easy to find for the next 20 years. If fear of replacement parts is your reason for succumbing to Shimano's marketing gimmicks, you need to pull your head out of the sand.

Do you understand the term NOS? I'm not looking for a Nitrous Oxide System.

Has anyone ever called you a Luddite? Just wondering.

So first it was "Quality parts will be hard to find [long before 6-7 years]", which morphed into New Old Stock is only what you were talking about, to throwing insults when you were shown to be in the wrong.

Entertaining.
